Chapter 9 - The Power Surge

The sudden failure of the center laser line caused a violent backlash of static electricity that crackled through the hallway, singeing the edges of the wallpaper. Vance cursed loudly, furiously tapping the buttons on his black remote, but the red LED indicator had turned a solid, angry amber.

"The grid is frying!" Vance yelled over the crackle of current. "Get back toward the kitchen, both of you! Now!"

"What's happening?" Sarah screamed, dragging a paralyzed Mark backward as the smell of burning ozone grew suffocatingly thick.

"The entity is drawing power from the apartment's main electrical grid," Vance said, ripping the cover off a wall-mounted junction box near the coat rack and yanking out a bundle of heavy copper wires. Sparks showered down onto the hardwood floor like fireworks. "It’s feeding on the ambient electromagnetic field. If it breaches the frame, the atmospheric equalization won't just affect this room—it will trigger a localized vacuum collapse."

"A vacuum collapse?" Sarah yelled, shielding Buster with her body as the golden retriever whined continuously. "Speak English! Will it kill us?"

"It will pull everything within a fifty-foot radius through that door frame," Vance said grimly, tying two thick wires together to create a manual circuit breaker. "Including us."

Mark stood frozen a few feet away, completely ignoring the chaos around him. His eyes were locked on the small pinhole in the center of the door, where the amber light had been replaced by a deep, absolute darkness—a void so dark it seemed to swallow the light from the smartphone still lying on the floor.

From within that void, a pale, slender hand emerged.

It slipped through the pinhole with impossible elasticity, the skin unnaturally smooth and gray, unblemished by joints or knuckles. The fingers stretched outward, elongating until they brushed against the polished wooden floorboards of the hallway.

"Mark!" Sarah shrieked, pointing at the impossible appendage.

Mark took a slow step forward, his hand extending toward the gray fingers as if drawn by an invisible tractor beam. "Clara..." he whispered again, a trance-like calm settling over his features.

"Don't touch it!" Vance roared, leaping across the hallway and swinging his heavy metal toolbox down like a hammer, smashing it directly onto the elongated fingers.

A sound like breaking glass echoed through the corridor.
