Chapter 14 - The Descent

The iron rungs were slick with condensation and freezing to the touch. Mark descended into the dark shaft, his muscles burning with fatigue, every breath a plume of white vapor in the sub-zero air. Below him, Buster’s claws scraped rhythmically against the metal rungs as the golden retriever maneuvered the vertical drop with uncanny agility, his eyes glowing a faint, reflective amber in the darkness.
"Mark! Are you down there?" Sarah’s voice echoed from far above, small and terrified.
"I'm here!" Mark called back, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls of the shaft. "Climb down, Sarah! Don't stay up there alone!"
A long pause stretched between them, filled only by the ominous, rhythmic humming of the subterranean machinery somewhere beneath their feet. Then, the sound of scraping shoes against metal signaled that Sarah had made her choice. She was coming down.
As they dropped deeper—past the level of the second floor, past the basement storage units, down into levels that didn't exist on any municipal map—the concrete walls gave way to smooth, seamless gray panels that pulsed with a faint, biological heartbeat.
Mark stopped on a wide metal landing at the very bottom of the shaft. In front of him stood a massive steel bulkhead door, identical to the one in their hallway, but ten times the size. Stenciled across the rusted metal in faded red paint were the words: PROJECT JANUS - SECTOR 01 - CONTAINMENT ACTIVE.
Sarah dropped down beside him onto the landing, shivering violently, her teeth chattering so hard she could barely speak. "Where... where are we?"
"The heart of it," Mark whispered.
The massive steel bulkhead slowly began to groan, its heavy locking mechanisms disengaging one by one without anyone touching them. A warm, sweet breeze drifted out from the opening, smelling of damp earth, old rain, and childhood memories.

And from the darkness beyond the bulkhead, a small, familiar voice spoke out, clear and bright: "Big brother? You took your time."
