Chapter 13 - The Architectural Blueprint

Sarah stared at him in horror, backing away until her spine hit the frozen front door. "What are you talking about? There's no other way out of this apartment!"

"Look at the blueprint," Mark said, holding up the yellowed paper he had retrieved from the manila folder earlier. He pointed to a small, overlooked square marked in the bottom right corner of the schematic—a square that overlapped directly with the building's original elevator shaft, which had been decommissioned forty years ago.

"There's an emergency maintenance hatch behind the pantry," Mark said, his voice steady and resolute. "It leads straight down to the foundation drain. It's the only way out before the atmospheric pressure completely equalizes."

Buster trotted over to Mark, pressing his golden head against Mark's knee and letting out a soft, reassuring whine, as if understanding the gravity of the moment.

"And if it doesn't lead outside?" Sarah asked, tears finally spilling over her lashes and freezing instantly on her cheeks as the ambient temperature in the hallway continued to plummet. "What if it just leads deeper into whatever that thing is?"

"Then we find out what happened to Clara," Mark said simply, walking over to the pantry door and grabbing the brass handle. He didn't hesitate. He pulled the door open, revealing not shelves of canned goods, but a vertical drop of rusty iron rungs descending into absolute, freezing darkness.

From deep below, the sound of rushing water—or something that sounded like thick, heavy breathing—echoed up through the shaft, accompanied by the faint, warm glow of a single amber light far, far down.

"I'm not going down there," Sarah whispered, shaking her head violently. "Mark, it's a trap. It's using your sister to lure us into the core."

"It's not a trap, Sarah," Mark said, turning to look her dead in the eye. The smartphone flashlight caught the profound sorrow and acceptance etched into his features. "It's a reconciliation. One way or another, this ends tonight."

Before Sarah could grab his arm to stop him, Mark swung his legs over the edge of the metal hatch and began to climb down into the freezing abyss, Buster following right behind him without a moment's hesitation.
