Chapter 9 - The Basement Collapse

The floorboards groaned under their feet as a second, much larger explosion rocked the lower levels of the house, sending a thick plume of black smoke billowing up through the heating ducts and attic stairs. The tactical agents immediately raised their weapons, shifting their focus toward the stairwell as alarms began to wail in the distance—not police sirens, but a high-pitched, automated klaxon that Mark had never heard before in all his years living in the neighborhood.
“Hostile breach in the sub-level!” one of the tactical operators shouted into his shoulder radio, his voice laced with sudden panic. “The containment vault has been compromised! Repeat, the sub-level vault is open!”
The lead agent shoved Mark hard against the brick chimney, turning to Clara with a furious expression. “You foolish woman! You didn't just hide the subject—you kept the access tunnel open to the primary reservoir, didn't you?”
Clara slumped against the attic wall, her face completely drained of color as she nodded slowly. “The foundation walls were cracking. The water heater rusted through last winter. I had to vent the pressure somewhere, or the whole house would have blown.”
Mark stared at his wife, the betrayal and confusion warring inside him until his chest felt like it was about to cave in. “What else didn't you tell me, Clara?” he demanded, his voice rising above the wailing alarm. “What’s actually down in our basement?”
Before Clara could speak, the girl with the melted features—who had retreated into the darkest shadows behind a stack of old trunks—let out a sharp, ear-piercing shriek that sounded more like tearing metal than a human voice. The iron-banded box on the ledger suddenly sprang open on its own, its hinges snapping violently as a blinding beam of intense blue light shot straight up through the attic roof, tearing through the shingles and illuminating the night sky outside.
The tactical agents opened fire into the shadows, their suppressed weapons kicking rhythmically as bullets sparked against the brick and timber.

“Fall back! Fall back to the perimeter!” the lead agent roared, grabbing Mark by the collar and dragging him toward the folding stairs. “The resonance cascade has started! If we don’t get out of this house in sixty seconds, we won't even leave ashes behind!”
