Chapter 10 - The Descent Through the Smoke

Mark tore himself free from the agent's grip, ignoring the gunfire and the blinding blue light, and sprinted toward the master bedroom door downstairs, where he had left Lily and the second girl locked away. The hallway was completely choked with thick, acrid smoke that burned his throat and made his eyes water uncontrollably. He threw his weight against the heavy oak door, but the security bolt had jammed from the shifting foundation of the exploding basement below.
“Clara! Help me with the door!” Mark coughed, slamming his shoulder against the wood until splinters tore through his shirt and bit into his skin.
Clara rushed to his side, her hands pressing flat against the grain as together they threw their weight forward. With a loud crack, the lock shattered, and the door swung wide open.
Inside the bedroom, the room was eerily calm compared to the chaos outside, bathed in the soft, ethereal blue glow leaking up from the floor grates. Lily and the burn-scarred girl were standing side by side in the center of the room, holding hands and staring up at the ceiling with wide, unblinking eyes. They weren't coughing or crying; they looked completely serene, as if they were listening to a melody only they could hear.
“Daddy, the bad men are leaving,” Lily said softly as Mark rushed in and scooped her up into his arms, pulling her tight against his chest. She pointed toward the open window, where the glass had completely shattered inward.
Outside, the treeline surrounding their property was alive with movement—dozens of figures dressed in heavy black gear were scrambling away from the house toward a fleet of unmarked vehicles idling on the gravel road. But what caught Mark’s breath in his throat wasn't the retreating tactical team; it was the massive, towering shadow rising up from the ground directly behind the back porch—a colossal, shifting silhouette made entirely of dark, pulsing light that seemed to swallow the stars above.
The lead agent appeared in the doorway, his face pale beneath his tactical gear as he raised a heavy metallic cylinder toward the center of the room.

“Drop the child, Reynolds!” the agent screamed over the rising roar of the wind. “She isn't your daughter anymore! She’s the anchor!”
