Chapter 7 - The Breach Below

The front door splintered inward with a loud crash of breaking oak and shattering deadbolts, echoing sharply up through the stairwell. Heavy, synchronized footsteps rushed across the foyer, followed by gruff, commanding voices shouting orders in a language Mark couldn't fully comprehend. Clara threw her arms around Maya and the second girl, pushing them backward into the master bedroom and slamming the door shut just as the hallway lights flickered and died.

“Federal agents! Stay where you are!” a voice bellowed from the bottom of the stairs, accompanied by the sharp metallic click of weapon safeties disengaging.

Mark stood paralyzed on the attic stairs, the glowing glass vials in the iron-banded box casting eerie, crimson reflections across his sweat-beaked face. The girl with his daughter's face didn't flinch at the shouting below; instead, she reached out a small, pale hand and pulled the final stopper from one of the glass vials, releasing a thick, sweet-smelling vapor that instantly filled the confined attic space.

“They aren't here to save us, Mark,” the girl said softly, her eyes turning completely black under the flickering overhead bulb. “They’re here to destroy the container before the transformation is complete.”

Downstairs, the sound of heavy gunfire erupted, the sharp cracks echoing through the hollow walls of the old house like rolling thunder. A stray bullet punched straight through the hallway floorboards near Mark’s feet, sending a shower of splintered oak flying into the air and missing his leg by mere inches. Clara’s muffled cry of terror from inside the bedroom pierced his heart, shattering his hesitation and replacing it with a cold, desperate resolve.

Mark lunged forward across the attic floor, ignoring the choking sweetness of the red vapor, and grabbed the iron-banded box out of the girl's hands, slamming the heavy lid down with brutal force. The glowing vials inside clinked together, and the strange vibrational hum instantly ceased, plunging the attic into a sudden, suffocating silence.

The girl stared at him, her black eyes narrowing with fury as her small frame began to shift and warp, her features stretching out of proportion like melting wax.

Before Mark could process the impossible horror unfolding right in front of him, a heavy hand grabbed the back of his shirt, hauling him backward off his feet as a tactical flashlight beam cut through the attic dust and blinded him with its harsh white glare.
