Chapter 2 - The Echo in the Hallway

The heavy footfalls echoing down the grand hallway belonged to Detective Vance, a man whose presence usually meant official business, though today he walked with an unhurried, almost proprietary stride. Emily’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she kept her gaze fixed on Margaret and David. The sudden arrival of an outsider froze the confrontation in its tracks, yet the tension in the kitchen remained thick enough to cut with a knife. Margaret quickly smoothed the lapels of her gold tweed jacket, erasing the panic from her face with practiced ease. David shifted his weight, his eyes darting toward the hallway entrance as Vance stepped into the sunlight.

"Good morning," Detective Vance said, his voice a low gravelly rumble. "I hope I’m not interrupting anything important. But given the circumstances of Arthur’s passing, I thought a quick follow-up was necessary."

Emily clutched the cracked smartphone tighter against her black top, the sharp edges of the glass biting into her palm. Vance’s timing was entirely too convenient. For weeks, the police had ruled Arthur’s death a natural consequence of old age and failing health. Now, standing in the very kitchen where her father-in-law had allegedly suffered his fatal stroke, Emily wondered if Vance was truly an investigator or merely another piece in Margaret’s elaborate web of control.

"Detective," Margaret said, her tone smooth and dripping with fabricated hospitality. "You are always welcome. We were just discussing family matters."

"Family matters," Vance repeated, his sharp eyes glancing briefly at the red mark still visible on Emily’s cheek.

Emily didn't look away. She met the detective's gaze directly, daring him to acknowledge the physical evidence of abuse right in front of him. But Vance merely looked back down at his leather-bound notebook. David cleared his throat, stepping slightly in front of Margaret as if to shield her from further scrutiny.

"Is there a specific reason you're here, Detective?" David asked, his voice tighter than usual.

Vance stepped closer to the marble counter, his gaze sweeping over the room before landing on the fruit bowl right next to Emily. "We found an anomaly in the final medical report," Vance said slowly, pausing for effect. "A discrepancy regarding the digital security logs of this house on the night Arthur died."

Emily’s breath hitched. She looked down at the cracked screen in her hand, which had gone dark. The video had stopped looping, but the memory of Arthur’s terrified face remained burned into her mind. Did Vance know about the hidden camera? Did he know that Arthur had been recording secret messages right under Margaret's nose?

"What kind of discrepancy?" Emily asked, her voice ringing out clearly across the silent kitchen.

Vance turned his head, fixing his penetrating stare squarely on her. "Someone accessed the master security server from inside this house at three in the morning—hours after Arthur was pronounced dead."
