Chapter 1 - The Strike and the Screen

The sharp slap echoed off the marble countertops of the sunlit kitchen, leaving a stinging warmth across Emily’s left cheek. Margaret stood over her, the pearls around her neck trembling with suppressed fury, her gold tweed jacket catching the morning light like polished armor. Margaret’s voice cut through the heavy air with terrifying precision.
"You are not leaving this family!" Margaret shouted, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.
Emily, a forty-year-old woman with shoulder-length brown hair and a beige button-down shirt over a black top, barely flinched from the physical blow. Instead, her gaze dropped instinctively to the kitchen counter. Resting right beside a bowl of fresh fruit was her cracked smartphone, its glass spider-webbed across the display, casting a harsh, unnatural glow over the polished granite surface. A video was playing automatically, looping a silent, frantic message.
Beside Margaret, David stood with his arms crossed, a dark polo shirt clinging tightly to his broad shoulders. At thirty-five, his face was a mask of tense anticipation. He watched Emily with dark, unblinking eyes, his breathing shallow and controlled. David did not step in to defend her. He never did. They moved as a coordinated unit, a tight-knit ecosystem guarding an invisible vault of shared deception.
Emily reached down with trembling fingers, picking up the cracked device. She pressed her thumb against the screen to maximize the hidden window. The video showed an elderly man with silver hair, speaking with urgent, rattling breaths. It was Arthur, her estranged father-in-law, who had supposedly passed away from a sudden stroke three weeks ago in this very house.
"Emily," Arthur whispered from the tiny speaker, his voice rasped with terror. "Don't trust Margaret."
The breath caught in Emily’s throat. She stared at the screen, the world around her tilting on its axis. Arthur had been bedridden for months before his supposed death, supposedly incoherent and heavily medicated by Margaret’s personal nurses. Yet here he was, alert, terrified, and warning her directly from beyond the grave. The implications crashed down upon her like a physical weight, unraveling every year of her marriage and her assimilation into this wealthy, suffocating dynasty.
Emily slowly looked up from the cracked screen, her eyes locking onto Margaret. The initial shock melted away, replaced by a sudden, terrifying clarity of disbelief and white-hot anger. Margaret’s face, usually a masterclass in composed aristocracy, suddenly fractured. Panic rippled across her aged features as she realized exactly what was playing on the glowing display.
"Who are you talking to?!" Margaret yelled, lunging forward to snatch the phone away.
Emily stepped back, dodging Margaret’s grasping hands with fluid grace. She held the phone tightly against her chest, her knuckles turning white. She stared at Margaret and David with an intense, burning fury that made both of them freeze in their tracks.
"What did you both know?" Emily demanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.

Before either of them could answer, the front door clicked unlocked, and a heavy set of footsteps echoed down the grand hallway.
