Chapter 8

In the nursery, the air was warm and smelled faintly of lavender and baby powder. Leo was fast asleep in his crib, his chest rising and falling in a steady, peaceful rhythm. Sitting in a comfortable armchair beside the window was Margaret, her spectacles resting on the bridge of her nose as she reviewed a ledger of household expenditures.

The door clicked open softly. Julian stepped into the room, his tie loosened and his jacket draped over his arm. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes evidence of days without proper rest. He walked quietly to the side of the crib, looking down at his son with a mixture of tenderness and deep sorrow.

"Is he asleep?" Julian whispered, careful not to disturb the boy.

"Soundly," Margaret replied, closing her ledger and setting it on the side table. "He’s resilient, Julian. Children have a remarkable capacity to adapt, provided they feel safe. But this environment is taking a toll on all of us."

Julian pulled up a small wooden chair and sat down opposite Margaret. "Marcus found the files from her university days," he said quietly, keeping his voice low. "It’s worse than we thought. There was an incident fifteen years ago involving a lab assistant and a toxic sedative. The university covered it up, and her uncle helped her disappear into a new life."

Margaret adjusted her spectacles, her expression grave. "A sociopath rarely changes their methodology, Julian. They simply scale up their ambitions. When Elena realized she couldn't control you through charm, she resorted to intimidation. When that failed with Clara, she escalated to physical force."

"And now she's backed into a corner," Julian rubbed his temples. "Marcus wants to file for an emergency custody injunction tomorrow morning, backed by the archived documents and Clara's medical records. But I'm worried about what she might try tonight before the papers are served."

"That is why Miller and I have secured the perimeter," Margaret said firmly. "No one enters or leaves this wing without my authorization. I have already locked the internal connecting doors between the master suite and the nursery hallway."

Julian looked toward the heavy wooden door that connected the nursery to the private master wing. "Can she bypass it?"

"Only with a master key or explosives," Margaret replied dryly. "And I took the liberty of removing the master override from the central console."

A sudden, faint sound echoed from down the hallway—a low, rhythmic tapping, like metal against wood. Both adults froze. Julian stood up slowly, stepping between the crib and the door. The sound stopped, replaced by the howling of the wind outside against the reinforced glass.

"Stay here," Julian murmured, drawing a small, polished brass key from his pocket—the physical override to the nursery door.

"Julian, no," Margaret whispered, standing up to block him. "Let security handle it."

"If it's her, I need to look her in the eye," Julian said, his voice hard as iron. He turned the key in the lock, pulled the heavy door open a crack, and stepped out into the dim corridor.
