Chapter 4

The forty-fifth floor of the Vance Tower offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, a sprawling grid of glass and steel that Julian had helped construct. Yet, sitting behind his walnut conference table, Julian felt entirely caged. Across from him sat Marcus Vance, his uncle and the senior partner of Vance Legal Group. Marcus was a man in his late sixties with silver hair and eyes that had seen every form of corporate and domestic depravity known to man.
Marcus slid a thick manila folder across the polished wood. Inside were bank statements, property deeds, and confidential psychiatric evaluations dating back five years.
"You can't just blindside her with a standard divorce petition, Julian," Marcus said, his voice gravelly from decades of smoking fine cigars. "Elena controls forty percent of the voting shares in the parent company. If you trigger a hostile separation without absolute proof of endangerment, she will tie up the assets, freeze the accounts, and drag your name through every tabloid in the country."
Julian opened the folder, his fingers tracing the edge of a financial transfer report. "She physically assaulted an employee in front of our son. I have a witness, and I have the medical report from the doctor who treated Clara last night."
"A nanny's word against a billionaire philanthropist's wife," Marcus sighed, leaning back in his leather chair. "It's a classic he-said-she-said in the eyes of family court, unless you can prove a pattern of psychological and physical abuse that goes beyond a single domestic scuffle. And even then, Elena’s legal team is ruthless. They’ll paint her as the stressed mother and you as the absentee husband."
"She threatened Leo," Julian whispered, the admission tasting like ash in his mouth. "She thinks he's an extension of her ambition, not a human being. When he doesn't perform to her exact standards, she punishes him in subtle ways. Clara caught her pushing him toward the edge of the second-floor landing two months ago. Clara covered for her out of fear, but yesterday it boiled over."
Marcus went silent, his expression hardening. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Why didn't you come to me sooner?"
"Because I was trying to save a marriage that was dead before we even walked down the aisle," Julian confessed, rubbing his face with both hands. "I thought if I gave her control, if I looked the other way, she would channel her ambition into the foundation instead of our home. I was wrong."
"Ambition like Elena's doesn't settle, Julian. It consumes," Marcus said grimly. He tapped a finger against the manila folder. "Here is what we are going to do. We don't file for divorce tomorrow. We build a trap. We let her think she is winning, let her make a move that violates the prenuptial morality clause explicitly. In the meantime, I’ll have our private investigators dig into her past before she legally changed her name ten years ago. Everyone has a history, Julian. Even Elena."

Julian looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the ant-like traffic crawling far below. "And Clara? She's terrified. If Elena realizes we're moving against her, Clara will be the first target."
"Clara stays with me at my estate in the country starting tonight," Marcus instructed. "We’ll replace her with someone who knows how to handle high-society pressure. Someone who won't break."
