Chapter 2

The mahogany-paneled study smelled of aged bourbon and leather-bound ledgers, a sanctuary where Julian usually retreated to escape the suffocating politics of his own household. Tonight, however, the room felt less like a refuge and more like an interrogation chamber. Leo was asleep upstairs in the nursery, watched over by a newly summoned family doctor and a security guard stationed outside the door. Julian sat behind his massive oak desk, staring down at a digital tablet displaying the estate's internal network diagnostics.

The door creaked open, and Elena glided into the room. She had discarded the riding crop, but she still wore the black dress, its severe lines cutting an imposing figure against the warm, amber tones of the study. She did not sit down. Instead, she walked over to the small bar cart, poured two fingers of amber liquid into a crystal tumbler, and took a slow sip before addressing her husband.

"You are making a grave mistake, Julian," she said, her voice dropping an octave, losing the public performance she usually maintained. "That girl is an interloper. She doesn't understand the dynamics of this family, the legacy we are trying to protect."

"The legacy," Julian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet as he locked the tablet screen and looked up. "Is that what you call terrorizing a toddler and beating a nineteen-year-old girl on the marble floor?"

"She was poisoning his mind," Elena retorted, stepping closer to the edge of the desk. Her eyes flashed with genuine anger now, stripping away the icy facade. "She was whispering things to him. Telling him that his mother doesn't love him. You expect me to stand by and watch some uneducated girl undo everything I have built?"

"Leo is three years old, Elena," Julian said, standing up to tower over her. "He doesn't know what poison is. But he knows fear. I saw the way he flinched when you raised that crop. I've seen that flinch before. In mirrors, in boardrooms, and now, God help me, in my own son."

Elena set her glass down with a sharp click that echoed in the quiet room. "You think you hold the moral high ground here, Julian? Who built the Vance empire? Who secured the mergers that keep your name relevant in this city? You were content to play the quiet academic until I forced you into the light. Now you want to play the righteous father?"

"I am a father," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "And that is the only reason you are still breathing the air in this house. If I find out you laid another finger on Clara—or on Leo—I won't just divorce you. I will dismantle everything you hold dear, brick by legal brick."

Elena stared at him, her chest rising and falling beneath the gold shoulder pads. Instead of shrinking away, a cold, humorless smile touched the corners of her lips. She reached out, adjusting the lapel of Julian's suit jacket with mock affection.

"You can try, my love," she whispered. "But you forget whose name is on the trust. And you forget what I know about how you made your first million."
