Chapter 2: The Ghost Town

Witness Protection dumped them in a quiet, fading town in upstate New York. Their new names were Arthur and Lily Miller. The safe house was a small, creaky two-bedroom cottage that smelled of old wood and pine. It was a far cry from the sterile, cold luxury of the mansion.
The first night, Lily sat on the edge of her twin bed, staring blankly at the wall. She hadn't spoken a word since the raid. Vance, a towering man covered in tattoos meant to intimidate, felt entirely helpless. He sat on the floor across from her, keeping his distance to give her space. He stayed awake the entire night, watching the window, his hand hovering over a gun he no longer carried. The silence between them was heavier than the marble they had left behind.
