Chapter 10: The Father-Daughter Dance

Spring arrived. The school hosted a father-daughter dance. Vance, wearing an ill-fitting suit he bought at a thrift store, felt entirely out of place among the suburban dads. But when Lily came out of her bedroom wearing a bright yellow dress, spinning in circles, Vance’s breath hitched.
At the dance, they stood on the edges until a slow song played. Vance picked her up, letting her stand on his heavy boots, and danced her around the gym floor. Lily laughed—a loud, ringing, joyous sound. Vance closed his eyes. This single moment was worth every danger, every sacrifice.
