Chapter 5 - The Fractured Family

The heavy pounding on the nursery door rattled the frame, interrupting the tense standoff between Amy and Eleanor. Eleanor didn't flinch; instead, she adjusted the neckline of her satin dress with infuriating calmness, casting one last warning glance at Amy before turning the deadbolt herself and pulling the door open.

Mark stood on the threshold, chest heaving, his dark suit jacket discarded and his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. His eyes darted anxiously between his mother and his wife, noting the rigid posture of both women and the distressed whimpering of the baby coming from the changing table.

“What is going on in here?” Mark demanded, his voice teetering on the edge of panic. “I heard shouting from down the hall. Mother, why are you locked in the nursery?”

“I came up to check on my grandson, Mark, since your wife seemed entirely incapable of managing a basic medical situation while throwing a fit downstairs,” Eleanor replied smoothly, slipping past her son with practiced grace. She paused at the door, offering Mark a sympathetic, martyred look. “She refuses to listen to reason, darling. And she still hasn't explained why the estate papers are missing from the secretary.”

“I told you, I didn’t take them!” Amy yelled, her voice cracking under the sheer weight of the exhaustion and betrayal pressing down on her. She turned back to the changing table, scooping the burning infant into her arms and rocking him gently against her chest. “Mark, look at me. Do you really believe your own mother over your wife? Do you actually think I would jeopardize our son’s safety to steal a folder?”

Mark stepped further into the room, running a hand through his dark hair in clear distress. He looked at Leo, whose skin was flushed a dangerous crimson, and his expression softened slightly as paternal instinct finally cut through the fog of family drama.

“Amy, I don’t know what to believe right now,” Mark admitted quietly, stepping toward her and holding out his hands tentatively. “Mother is convinced the papers are gone, and the locksmith confirmed someone accessed the safe during the cocktail hour. It just... it doesn't look good.”

“It doesn’t look good?” Amy echoed, a bitter laugh escaping her lips as she stepped back, keeping a barrier of space between them. “You’re standing in our home, looking at your wife of five years, and instead of asking if your son is okay, you’re playing detective for a woman who has tried to undermine me since day one!”

“That is enough, Amy!” Mark snapped, his patience finally snapping under the pressure. “Stop making this about my mother! We have a crisis here, and you are immediately getting defensive instead of helping us figure out where those documents went!”

“I am taking my son to the hospital,” Amy declared, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm, resolute whisper. She grabbed the diaper bag with one hand while holding Leo tight against her shoulder. “Move out of my way, Mark.”

Mark blocked the doorway, his jaw set in a stubborn line.

“You’re not going anywhere until we sort this out. We are calling our family pediatrician, and we are searching that bag.”

As Mark lunged forward to grab the strap of the diaper bag, the front pocket ripped open, and a bulky manila envelope slid out, hitting the floor with a heavy thud.
