Chapter 11 - The Arrival of the Law

The flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers painted the courtyard in stark, flickering hues of crimson and cobalt. The cruisers skidded to a halt near the edge of the paved driveway, their tires crunching loudly over the gravel. Amy kept her foot firmly on the brake, the engine of her sedan rumbling beneath her while Mark stood just a few feet away, his hands still raised in a desperate, pleading gesture. Through the driver’s side window, she watched two uniformed officers step out of the lead cruiser, their heavy boots hitting the pavement with authoritative precision.

The first officer, a tall, weathered sergeant with graying hair and a stern expression, immediately surveyed the chaotic scene—the smoke curling lazily from the rear windows of the mansion, the angry guard standing by the garage, and the tense standoff between the husband and wife by the idling car.

“Alright, what’s going on here?” the sergeant called out, resting a hand casually on the holster of his duty belt as he approached Mark. “We got a call reporting a domestic disturbance and a possible theft in progress at this address.”

Mark dropped his hands, running them frantically through his soot-streaked hair before turning to face the officer.

“Officer, thank God you’re here,” Mark said, his voice breathless and ragged. “There’s been a misunderstanding. A... a terrible family dispute. My wife was trying to leave with our son, who is running a fever, but—”

“Your wife is trying to escape because you had a security guard physically trap her in the courtyard with a sick child!” Amy shouted, pushing the driver’s side door open and stepping out into the cold night air, her voice cutting through the hum of the cruiser engines. She clutched little Leo tightly against her chest, her eyes blazing with fury as she addressed the sergeant directly. “Officer, my name is Amy Harrison. My husband and his mother just spent the last hour accusing me of stealing estate documents, locking me in the nursery, and now he has ordered his private security to physically bar me from taking my son to the hospital!”

The sergeant glanced sharply from Amy to Mark, his brow furrowing as he processed the competing narratives.

“Is this true, sir?” the sergeant asked Mark, his tone turning instantly skeptical. “Did you lock your wife on the property against her will?”

“I didn’t want her trapped, I wanted to sort out the situation!” Mark stammered, stepping toward Amy with pleading eyes. “Amy, please, just calm down. We can explain everything inside once the police take the report. You don’t need to go to the hospital right this second, the pediatrician is on the phone—”

“My son’s fever is over one hundred and four degrees, Mark! I am not waiting another second for your mother’s permission to save his life!” Amy yelled, tears of absolute exhaustion finally breaking through her resolve. She turned back to the sergeant, her voice trembling. “Officer, please. I need to get my baby to St. Jude’s Emergency Room. Can you escort us off this property before my husband’s guards try to stop me again?”

The sergeant nodded firmly, stepping between Mark and Amy to create a protective barrier.

“Step back, Mr. Harrison. Your wife and child are leaving right now, and you and I are going to have a long conversation about unlawful restraint,” the sergeant ordered, gesturing for Amy to get back into her car.

As Amy scrambled back into the driver’s seat and slammed the door, she looked across the roof of the car and saw Eleanor standing on the rear porch steps wrapped in a fur shawl, watching the entire exchange with a cold, triumphant smirk playing on her lips.
