Chapter 3: An Empty House

Back at the house, the silence felt heavier than it had before Sarah left. Clara stood in the kitchen, wiping down the already spotless granite countertops with a damp cloth. Her movements were mechanical, driven by a restless energy that refused to let her sit still. The gold bracelet on her wrist slid up and down her arm with every wipe, producing a rhythmic, metallic chime that echoed in the empty room. She told herself that she was simply being honest, that standards mattered, and that coddling people only made them weak. Yet, a quiet, nagging voice in the back of her mind whispered that she had pushed too far this time.

Mark remained in the living room, staring blindly at the television screen, which was turned off. He hadn't followed Sarah, knowing that she needed space to process the chaotic energy of the evening. He felt a profound sense of exhaustion, a bone-deep tiredness that came from years of trying to earn approval from a woman who viewed affection as a currency to be rationed. He loosened the top button of his blue shirt, breathing heavily as he replayed the argument in his head.

"She'll come back," Clara called out from the kitchen, her voice carrying a brittle edge of uncertainty. She walked into the living room, stopping near the doorway with her arms crossed once more.

Mark looked up at her, his expression flat and unreadable. "I don't think she's coming back tonight, Clara. And honestly, I don't blame her."

Clara stiffened, her jaw tightening. "You’re enabling her sensitivity, Mark. In my day, family stuck together through thick and thin, no matter what was said over dinner."

"This isn't about sensitivity," Mark said quietly, standing up from the sofa. "It's about respect. And right now, there isn't any left in this house."

He grabbed his jacket from the coat rack, ignoring Clara's sharp intake of breath, and walked out the front door, leaving her alone in the quiet house with her spotless counters and her unyielding pride.
