Chapter 13: Facing the Shadows

Despite the progress, healing was not a linear path. One evening a few weeks later, a minor disagreement nearly derailed their newfound peace. Clara had dropped by unannounced to drop off some mail, and upon seeing laundry piled neatly on Sarah’s couch waiting to be folded, an old habit flared up.
"You know, leaving clothes out like that invites wrinkles," Clara remarked offhandedly, the old critical reflex slipping out before she could catch it.
The room went instantly quiet. Mark stopped typing on his laptop, and Sarah turned from the kitchen sink, her shoulders tightening. Clara froze, realizing what she had said the moment the words left her mouth. Panic fluttered in her chest; she braced herself for the anger and the inevitable retreat that her comment would trigger.
Instead of yelling or storming out, Sarah took a slow, deep breath, mirroring the exact gesture she had used on the porch weeks ago. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, then looked at her mother with calm, steady eyes.
"Mom," Sarah said gently, her voice devoid of accusation. "Habit?"
Clara flushed slightly, lowering her gaze to the floor. She lifted her hand, touching the gold bracelet on her wrist as a grounding mechanism. "I'm sorry," she whispered, the apology coming easier this time, though still heavy with self-reproach. "Old instincts die hard. I didn't mean to police your living room."

Mark closed his laptop and walked over, placing a supportive hand on Sarah’s shoulder while offering a small, understanding smile to Clara. "It's alright, Clara. Just catch yourself before the words finish coming out."
Clara nodded, a profound sense of relief washing over her. She didn't have to be perfect; she just had to be willing to course-correct when she stumbled. The moment passed without a blow-up, proving that their new boundaries were strong enough to withstand human error.
