Chapter 15: A Place at the Table

The weekend of the camping trip arrived with clear blue skies and a crisp autumn breeze that rustled the golden leaves of the state park. Clara, Sarah, and Mark stood around a crackling campfire, setting up the campsite as dusk settled over the woods. Mark was struggling slightly with a stubborn tent pole, grunting in mild frustration as he tried to slot it into place.

Clara walked over, holding a warm mug of coffee. Instead of offering a critique or taking over with a superior attitude, she simply handed him the mug and smiled. "Need a hand with that angle, Mark?" she asked gently.

Mark wiped a smudge of dirt from his forehead, grinning back at her. "Actually, yeah. If you hold this side steady, I think it'll click right in."

Working together, the tent went up in seconds. Sarah walked over from the folding table, carrying a white covered casserole dish filled with pre-made stew, ready to be warmed over the open fire. She set it down gently on the camp table next to an aluminum pie tin holding a decidedly lopsided, store-bought apple pie.

They sat down on their folding chairs around the campfire, watching the orange flames leap into the darkening evening sky. There was no tension, no unspoken resentment, and no pressure to measure up to an impossible standard. They were simply a family, imperfect and whole, enjoying the warmth of the fire and the comfort of each other's presence.

Clara raised her coffee mug in a silent toast, looking at her daughter and son-in-law with eyes full of quiet affection. Sarah smiled back, raising her own mug to meet it in the dimming light. The past arguments, the harsh words, and the heavy silences felt far away, replaced by the simple, enduring truth that love was not about perfection—it was about choosing each other, every single day, around the table of life.
