Chapter 6

The roar of the crowd inside the regional sports complex sounded like rushing water against the distant walls of the cavernous gymnasium. The smell of chalk dust, floor wax, and nervous sweat hung thick in the air. David sat in the second row of the bleachers, his palms slightly damp as he gripped a professional-grade digital camera with a telephoto lens. Beside him, Tyler was keeping score on a crumpled program sheet, muttering encouragement under his breath.
Down on the floor, Mia stood at the edge of the vault runway. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a neat, high ponytail, tied with a dark blue scrunchie that matched her competition leotard. She took a deep, measured breath, closing her eyes for two seconds to center herself before looking up at the vault table looming twenty-five meters away. Her small frame radiated fierce concentration, stripped of all vulnerability.
"She’s got this," Tyler whispered, elbowing his father gently. "Her Yurchenko layout has been landing clean all week during practice."
"She just needs to commit to the block," David replied, his heart hammering against his ribs in a rhythm matching the nervous energy of every parent watching their child perform on a high-stakes stage.
A sharp whistle blew from the head judge’s podium. Mia raised her right hand, signaling she was ready. She started down the runway, her small running strides accelerating with explosive precision, each footfall striking the blue matting with crisp authority. She hit the springboard with maximum force, propelled her body upward into a handspring onto the table, executed a flawless layout with a half-twist in mid-air, and planted her feet firmly on the mat upon landing, holding the pose for a beat before raising both arms to the judges.
The judges held up their scoring paddles almost instantly: 9.45, 9.5, 9.4. It was her personal best score of the season.
The section of the bleachers where David and Tyler sat erupted into cheers. David raised his camera and captured the exact moment Mia’s face broke into a radiant, unfiltered smile, her eyes scanning the stands until they locked onto her father and brother. She gave a quick, excited wave before marching off the floor with her arms held high in quiet confidence.

For David, seeing that genuine joy was a profound vindication. This was the exact opposite of the cold, stifling environment Elena tried to impose. Here, Mia’s hard work was celebrated openly, without hesitation, apology, or guilt. Tyler leaned over the barrier, shouting her name and pumping his fist in the air.
As the rotation ended and the gymnasts gathered for a brief water break, David lowered his camera, feeling a deep sense of peace settle over him for the first time in months. The separation proceedings were still moving forward through their respective attorneys, but the emotional fog inside their home had permanently lifted. They were carving out a new normal, one built on mutual respect and genuine support rather than fragile perfectionism.
