Chapter 14

The bedroom upstairs was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a Sunday afternoon. Mia stood on her tiptoes, carefully pushing a red pushpin into the cork bulletin board hanging directly above her white wooden desk. In the absolute center of the board, gleaming under the natural light from the window, hung the heavy gold-plated medal she had rescued from the trash months ago.
Around it were arranged ribbons, photographs of her gymnastics team, and a snapshot of her and Tyler smiling beside David at the regional track meet. The entire board told a story of hard work, resilience, and unconditional love—a visual testament to everything they had built together.
David leaned against the bedroom doorway, his arms crossed comfortably over his chest, watching his daughter complete her display.
"How does it look?" Mia asked, stepping back to admire her work with her hands on her hips.
"It looks perfect," David said sincerely, walking into the room and resting a hand on her shoulder. "Every single piece on that board belongs right there. You earned every bit of it."
Tyler appeared in the doorway, wearing a pair of headphones around his neck and holding a basketball under his arm. He peeked over his sister's shoulder at the bulletin board.
"Not bad, kid," Tyler teased gently. "Though my relay medal from the invitational still looks shinier."
"Does not!" Mia retorted with a playful grin, grabbing a small plush pillow from her bed and tossing it lightly at her brother's chest.
Tyler caught it easily, laughing as he tossed it back. The sound of their laughter echoed down the hallway, light and unburdened, filling the house with a vibrant energy that no amount of past conflict could ever touch again.
David looked at his two children, feeling a profound sense of gratitude wash over him. The storm had broken, the debris had been cleared away, and what remained was something far stronger and more authentic than the fragile illusion they had once tried to maintain. They were a real family, forged in the fires of reality and anchored by mutual trust and unwavering support.

"Alright, you two," David announced, clapping his hands together. "Who's ready for Sunday night pizza? Because I am definitely not cooking tonight."
"Pizza!" Mia cheered, racing out of the room toward the stairs, with Tyler close behind her, calling out a challenge for the last slice.
