Chapter 11

The regional track and field invitational was held at the university stadium across town. The crisp autumn air was electric with the cheers of hundreds of spectators packed into the grandstands. David sat in the front row near the finish line, holding his professional camera with a long-range lens, while Mia bounced excitedly on the bench beside him, waving a foam finger in the air.

Down on the red polyurethane track, Tyler was stretching his hamstrings, his face locked in intense, focused concentration. This was his moment—the culmination of months of early morning runs, grueling interval training, and disciplined recovery.

"Runners, take your marks!" the announcer’s voice boomed over the stadium loudspeaker.

The four runners in the final relay heat crouched into their starting blocks. Tyler was the anchor runner for his team, meaning everything depended on him maintaining or closing the gap during the final hundred meters. The starter pistol cracked sharply into the afternoon sky.

The runners exploded forward. The baton passed smoothly from first to second, then from second to third. When the third runner rounded the final turn, Tyler’s team was running in a tight second place behind a notoriously fast runner from a rival academy.

"Go, Ty! Go!" Mia screamed, jumping up and down on the bleacher seat, her ponytail whipping back and forth.

Tyler caught the baton cleanly on the exchange zone, his legs immediately finding an incredible gear of acceleration. He pumped his arms with rhythmic precision, closing the gap meter by meter against the leading runner. The crowd surged to its feet, roaring encouragement as the two athletes thundered down the final stretch toward the finish line.

With one final, desperate burst of energy, Tyler leaned forward across the white chalk line, edging his competitor by a fraction of a second.

The stadium erupted. David lowered his camera, having captured the exact millisecond Tyler crossed the finish line with an expression of pure, unadulterated triumph on his face. Tears prickled at the corners of David’s eyes—not of sadness, but of overwhelming pride. This was what real parenting looked like: standing on the sidelines, bearing witness to your children's victories without needing to steal their spotlight.

Moments later, Tyler jogged over to the stands, breathing heavily, sweat beading on his forehead, wearing a massive, triumphant grin. Mia vaulted over the barrier into his arms, nearly knocking him over.

"You won! You actually won!" Mia shouted.

Tyler laughed, hugging his sister tightly before looking up at his father. David walked down the steps, wrapped both of them in a fierce embrace, and said the words that mattered most: "I am so damn proud of both of you."
