Chapter 7

Before Chloe could take another step into the ballroom or demand a clearer answer regarding the tense atmosphere, a sharp, authoritative cough broke the heavy silence from across the room. Arthur, the seasoned wedding coordinator hired at great expense to ensure absolute perfection, materialized from the shadows near the catering entrance with a clipboard clutched tightly to his chest. His practiced smile felt entirely brittle, a thin veneer masking his mounting panic as he surveyed the dysfunctional group blocking the primary aisle. He stepped forward with hurried, calculated strides, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the wood. Excuse me, pardon me, everyone, Arthur interjected smoothly, though his eyes darted nervously between Julian’s rigid stance and the bride’s tear-filled eyes. We are scheduled to begin the processional in precisely four minutes, and the string quartet is waiting for your final signal, Mr. Vance. Arthur’s intervention was a classic hospitality maneuver designed to save face, but it landed like a lead weight in an environment already saturated with explosive tension. Julian felt a surge of irritation at the coordinator's interruption, yet he also recognized the logistical lifeline being tossed their way. If they did not move right now, the entire timeline of the evening would unravel into public chaos. Eleanor slowly released a long, shaky breath, dabbing delicately at the corner of her eye with a pristine linen handkerchief she had retrieved from the sleeve of her gown. She refused to let the staff see her break down completely, retreating behind the impenetrable fortress of her upper-class upbringing. Chloe stood frozen in the doorway, clutching her bouquet so tightly that the delicate stems bruised beneath her white-gloved fingers. She looked at Arthur as if he were speaking a foreign language, completely paralyzed by the emotional crossfire between her mother and the man she had always viewed as the ultimate authority figure in her life. Clara used the momentary distraction to gently guide Eleanor back a half-step, creating a tiny buffer zone between the warring factions. Julian offered Arthur a tight, clipped nod of acknowledgment, signaling that he understood the urgency, even as he knew resolving the immediate scheduling crisis would do nothing to heal the deep, structural fractures currently threatening to tear the family apart before the first vows were even spoken.
