Chapter 5
All movement in the immediate vicinity froze as the heavy mahogany doors swung fully open to reveal the glowing figure framed against the hallway light. Standing in the threshold was Chloe, radiant and breathless in her pristine white wedding dress, the delicate lace veil cascading down over her dark brown hair like a waterfall of spun frost. She looked every bit the twenty-year-old bride stepping into the most important day of her life, holding a small bouquet of white roses that trembled slightly in her gloved hands. But the beatific smile that should have illuminated her face was entirely absent, replaced by an expression of profound, crushing hurt as she took in the strained postures of Julian, Eleanor, and Clara gathered near the head table. Chloe’s large, dark eyes darted from Julian's solemn tuxedo to Eleanor’s tear-stained face, instantly recognizing the familiar emotional shrapnel of a family feud she had prayed would stay dormant for at least one evening. The festive atmosphere of the entire ballroom seemed to shrink around her, isolating the small group in a harsh, unforgiving spotlight. Chloe’s chest rose and fell in a shallow, rapid rhythm, her breath catching in her throat as she processed the exact layout of the room, including the cruel reality of the place cards resting on the pristine white tablecloth. The silence that followed her entrance was deafening, broken only by the faint, muffled rustle of her heavy crinoline petticoats as she took one tentative, hesitant step forward across the threshold. Her voice, when it finally broke past her dry lips, carried a plaintive, heartbreaking vulnerability that cut straight through the ambient noise of the venue, demanding an immediate explanation for the hostility she had inadvertently walked in on. Mom? Mom? Chloe whispered into the quiet expanse, her voice cracking softly on the second syllable as she stared directly at the older woman whose lower lip was still trembling from the shock of Julian's earlier demand.
