Chapter 1

The white floral arrangements on table four smelled heavily of imported gardenias, a scent that Julian always associated with high-stakes charity galas rather than family weddings. He stood beside his wife, Eleanor, adjusting the stiff satin lapels of his black tuxedo while his eyes drifted back down to the small, stiff piece of heavy cardstock resting beside the crystal wine glasses. The neat, elegant calligraphy printed across the stiff paper read "Melissa 2023." It was a deliberate, calculated placement, one that ignored the traditional seating charts drafted by the professional wedding planner weeks ago. Julian knew the arrangement would cause friction, but he felt an exhausted sort of resignation about it all. Across the expansive, polished oak floor of the ballroom, the soft murmur of string quartet instruments blended with the distant clatter of silverware from the catering kitchens. Eleanor was smiling politely at an elderly uncle who had just ambled past, her pearl earrings catching the warm amber glow of the crystal chandeliers overhead. Julian watched her profile, noting the rigid set of her jaw beneath the polished facade. He cleared his throat softly, shifting his weight from one polished Italian leather shoe to the other. He reached out with a manicured finger to adjust the fork beside the place card, his mind racing through the complicated web of family histories, suppressed grievances, and unresolved debts that had brought them to this exact ballroom on a crisp autumn evening. The air felt heavy, saturated with an impending storm that only he and Eleanor seemed fully prepared to weather. He glanced toward the entrance archway where the heavy mahogany doors remained shut, keeping the bride hidden away for just a few more precious moments. Turning his head slightly toward Eleanor, Julian prepared himself to speak the words he had rehearsed a dozen times during the quiet limousine ride over, knowing that once uttered, there would be no way to retract the damage they were bound to cause.
