Chapter 7 - The Ghost from the Past

The printed email trembled in Daniel’s hand as the implications of the second mortgage document sank into his consciousness. The signature at the bottom wasn't just a forgery of his own name or a random probate judge; it bore the distinct, looping handwriting of Arthur Vance—Daniel’s uncle, who had allegedly passed away in a tragic mountaineering accident in the Swiss Alps a decade prior.

“Where did you get this?” Daniel demanded, looking past Sarah to the terrified wedding coordinator cowering near the doorway.

The young coordinator swallowed hard, wringing her hands together in absolute panic. “I—I was checking the venue’s administrative terminal downstairs because the catering deposit hadn't cleared, sir. An automated notification popped up from the county clerk’s office regarding an emergency lien on the downtown commercial property tied to your family trust. The digital timestamp says the transaction was authorized from an IP address originating right here in this hotel building less than an hour ago.”

Daniel slowly turned his head to look directly at Marcus. The color had completely drained from Marcus’s face, leaving him looking sickly and grey under the bright lights of the bridal suite.

“Uncle Arthur,” Daniel whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. “He isn't dead, is he?”

Marcus swallowed hard, taking a half-step backward until the back of his legs hit the velvet settee. He didn't answer, but his terrified silence spoke volumes.

Elena slammed her hands down onto the glass table again, her face twisted in desperate rage. “Shut up! Don't say another word, Marcus! The idiot has no proof linking us directly to Arthur!”

“I don't need proof linking you to Arthur anymore, Elena,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he walked slowly toward Marcus. “I have a federal wire fraud investigator who is already reviewing the county clerk’s digital logs. If Arthur is alive and helping you launder money out of my family’s estate, he’s going to prison right along with both of you.”

Marcus let out a nervous, breathless laugh, trying desperately to bluff his way out of a corner that was rapidly closing in. “You’re bluffing, Daniel. You don't have an investigator. You’re just a small-town businessman who sells timber and antiques. You wouldn't even know who to call!”

Before Daniel could reply, his smartphone buzzed sharply in his hand. He glanced down at the screen. The caller ID displayed an unknown number with a Washington, D.C. area code. Without breaking eye contact with Marcus, Daniel tapped the speakerphone icon and raised the device.

“This is Daniel Vance,” he said clearly.

A crisp, authoritative voice echoed through the silent bridal suite. “Mr. Vance, this is Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division. We’ve been tracking a sophisticated shell company network operating out of the tri-state area under the name Vance Holdings LLC. Our digital forensics team just intercepted an attempted wire transfer of one point two million dollars from your family trust account to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. We have units currently dispatching to the Grandview Hotel to secure the premises and detain the primary suspects.”

Elena let out a sharp, choked gasp and collapsed backward onto the velvet armchair, burying her face in her hands as her expensive wedding veil caught on the armrest and tore away from her hair with a soft ripping sound.

Marcus lunged forward toward the door in a desperate bid to escape, but Sarah anticipated the movement and slammed the heavy white double doors shut, locking them from the inside before Marcus could reach the handle.

“You’re not going anywhere, Marcus,” Sarah said fiercely, blocking his path.

Daniel looked down at his phone, his expression completely blank as the reality of the betrayal finally settled over him.

“Thank you, Agent Miller,” Daniel said into the phone. “They’re right here in the bridal suite.”

As sirens began to wail faintly in the street below the hotel windows, the heavy double doors began to shake under the heavy, urgent pounding of federal agents demanding entry from the hallway.
