Chapter 4 - The Corridor Witness

Outside the heavy white double doors of the bridal suite, the hotel hallway stretched out in quiet luxury, lined with expensive patterned carpeting and soft sconce lighting. Sophie stood pressed against the floral wallpaper, her small hands clutching the hem of her white flower girl dress while silent tears continued to leave damp tracks down her cheeks. Standing beside her was Sarah, Daniel’s younger sister, whose face was a mask of fierce, protective anger.

Sarah had suspected Elena from the very first day her brother introduced the ambitious woman to the family. She had kept her observations to herself for months, trying to support Daniel’s happiness, but the events of the past ten minutes confirmed every dark intuition she had ever harbored.

“It’s going to be okay, sweetie,” Sarah whispered softly, kneeling down to wipe a stray tear from Sophie’s cheek with her thumb. “Your daddy is strong. He’s not going to let anyone hurt you or take our home away.”

Sophie sniffled, looking up at her aunt with wide, frightened eyes. “She was so mean, Aunt Sarah. She told me that if I talked to Daddy about the man on the phone, she would send me away to a boarding school where I would never see him again.”

Sarah’s blood boiled at the words. She gently pulled the little girl into a warm, reassuring hug, resting her chin on top of Sophie’s brown hair.

“Nobody is sending you anywhere, I promise you,” Sarah murmured, her eyes darting toward the heavy double doors of the suite. Muffled voices could be heard through the thick wood, rising and falling in sharp, tense cadences, though the actual words were indistinguishable.

Suddenly, the elevator doors at the far end of the hallway chimed softly, breaking the tense silence of the corridor. A tall, sharply dressed man in a dark charcoal suit stepped out into the hallway. He had slicked-back dark hair, cold gray eyes, and an air of arrogant entitlement that seemed entirely out of place in a family wedding venue. He carried a leather briefcase in one hand and checked his phone with the other, stride purposeful and unhurried as he headed directly toward the bridal suite.

Sarah immediately recognized him from the rehearsal dinner the night before—Marcus, Elena’s brother, who had arrived late, barely spoke to anyone, and spent the entire evening pacing near the exit with his phone pressed to his ear.

“Excuse me, sir,” Sarah said, standing up abruptly and stepping directly into the man’s path, blocking his way to the bridal suite. “This area is restricted right now. The bride and groom are preparing for the ceremony.”

Marcus stopped, looking down at Sarah with a dismissive smirk that didn't reach his cold eyes. He adjusted the lapel of his expensive suit before speaking.

“I am well aware of what is happening inside that room, sweetheart,” Marcus replied, his voice smooth and condescending. “And I have every right to be here. I’m family now, aren't I?”

“You are not family,” Sarah shot back, her voice ringing clear and sharp in the quiet hallway. “And you aren't stepping another foot closer to those doors until my brother comes out.”

Marcus chuckled softly, a sound that sent a shiver down Sarah’s spine. He took a slow step forward, towering over her.

“Your brother is currently signing the papers that make my sister a very wealthy woman,” Marcus whispered, leaning in close. “You might want to step aside before you ruin things for him, too.”
