Chapter 3 - The Inheritance Trap

The name of Daniel’s late father hung in the air between them like a physical weight. The sprawling Victorian estate on the edge of town, a property that had belonged to the family for three generations, was the single most valuable asset Daniel owned. It was also the primary point of contention ever since Elena had moved in six months after they met.

“What do you mean by that?” Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper as he closed the remaining distance between them. “What does my father’s estate have to do with a text message about a house?”

Elena let out a short, bitter laugh that lacked any hint of humor. She reached up and pulled a loose hairpin from her elaborate hairstyle, letting a long brown lock fall across her shoulder with deliberate slowness.

“You always were entirely too trusting, Daniel. That’s why your father left the estate to you in a trust rather than an outright deed, isn’t it?” Elena sneered, her eyes glittering with malice. “He knew you were soft. He knew you would marry the first pretty face that came along and played mother to your whiny little daughter.”

Daniel felt a hot wave of anger surge through his veins, but he forced himself to stay grounded. He needed information, not an emotional explosion.

“Keep my father and my daughter out of your mouth,” Daniel warned, his jaw tight. “Explain the text message. Now.”

Elena crossed the room and picked up her leather handbag from the settee, pulling out a thick manila folder that had been hidden in the bottom compartment. She tossed it onto the glass-topped coffee table with a sharp slap that echoed in the quiet suite.

“Read it, genius. It’s the prenuptial agreement your lawyer drafted, alongside a quitclaim deed transferring ownership of the Victorian house into a joint LLC,” Elena said, her tone dripping with condescension. “Except the LLC isn't in my name. It’s in my brother’s name. Once you sign the marriage certificate and the property transfer papers today, the house legally becomes ours. The moment the ink dries, I file for divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences, and under the terms of the prenup you were too proud to read thoroughly, I walk away with half your generational wealth and sole occupancy of the estate.”

Daniel stared at the manila folder on the table as if it were a venomous snake. The words swam before his eyes, but the brutal reality of the scam was crystal clear. Every romantic dinner, every sweet moment she had shared with Sophie, every comforting word during the tough nights—it had all been an elaborate, calculated performance designed to steal his family legacy.

“You planned this from the very beginning,” Daniel whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow to the chest. “You never loved me. You didn't even care about Sophie.”

“Love is a luxury for people who don't have rent to pay, Daniel,” Elena replied coldly, checking her diamond-encrusted wristwatch with practiced indifference. “You have ten minutes before the guests in the chapel downstairs realize the bride and groom are missing. If you walk out there, smile, and sign those papers like a good little boy, I might let you keep visitation rights to your own house.”

Daniel looked at the woman standing before him in her pristine white dress, realizing he had never truly known her at all. He reached out slowly, his hand hovering over the manila folder on the glass table.

“And if I refuse?” Daniel asked, looking straight into her eyes.

Elena smiled, a cruel, triumphant expression that twisted her sharp features into something genuinely frightening.

“Then I ruin you publicly, Daniel, and I take your daughter away faster than you can blink.”
