Chapter 7 - The Midnight Escape

Before Marcus could take a step toward her, the headlights of another vehicle suddenly cut through the heavy fog at the end of the driveway, casting blinding twin beams across the cabin porch. The vehicle wasn't Arthur’s sleek luxury sedan; it was an unmarked, heavy-duty black SUV that barreled up the gravel path without slowing down, blocking their only exit route.
Clara froze, her hand hovering over the back door handle of Marcus's car where Lily was still sleeping. The engine of the SUV idled aggressively, its deep, heavy rumble vibrating through the ground.
“Get back inside the car, Clara!” Marcus yelled, his instincts instantly kicking in as he bolted toward her, shoving her behind his body while drawing his phone to dial emergency services.
“Who is that?” Clara gasped, peeking over Marcus’s broad shoulder as the driver-side door of the SUV slowly creaked open.
A tall figure stepped out into the blinding glare of the high beams, dressed in a heavy tactical jacket with the collar turned up against the chill. As the person stepped closer, the harsh light illuminated a face neither of them expected to see—Detective Miller, the head of the local county police department and a man who had dined at the Vance family estate on numerous occasions.
Detective Miller didn't look like a law enforcement officer responding to a midnight call; he looked like a man executing a quiet, pre-arranged extraction. He kept his hands resting casually near his utility belt, his expression entirely unreadable.
“Put the phone away, Marcus,” Miller said calmly, his voice carrying an eerie authority that cut through the idling engine noise. “Calling the cops out here won't help you. I am the cops, and right now, I'm the only thing standing between you and a federal warrant for kidnapping.”
Marcus lowered his phone slowly, his jaw tight with suppressed rage.
“Kidnapping? Lily is my daughter, Miller, and Clara is my wife. You have no legal jurisdiction to pull this crap,” Marcus fired back, taking a protective step forward.
Miller let out a long, weary sigh, pulling a folded legal document from his jacket pocket and holding it up for them to see in the harsh headlights.
“Legally speaking, Marcus? Your mother filed an emergency petition for guardianship two hours ago, citing mental instability and abandonment of a minor,” Miller replied smoothly. “The judge signed it before the reception even ended. That little girl in the backseat is officially a ward of the state, placed directly under the custody of Helena Vance.”
Clara gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth as the devastating reality of the Vance family's immense power slammed into her. They hadn't just escaped the wedding; they had walked right into a trap engineered long before they ever walked down the aisle.
“No,” Clara whispered fiercely, pulling the rear car door open despite Marcus’s warning. She scooped sleeping Lily into her arms, pressing the terrified child against her chest as the little girl woke up with a start, whimpering softly in the cold air.
Detective Miller stepped closer, his expression hardening into a cold, professional mask as he reached out to grab Lily's arm.
