Chapter 2 - Walking Out Into The Cold

The heavy oak doors of the reception hall swung open with a resounding thud, echoing sharply against the polished marble floor. Marcus held his ground, his hand firmly resting on the small of Clara’s back as she scooped little Lily into her arms. The child’s dark sparkly dress caught the overhead lights, a lonely glitter against the dark mood of the exit. Helena stumbled forward, her face flushed with a mixture of rage and sheer panic as she realized her son was actually walking away from his own high-profile wedding celebration.

“Marcus, you cannot possibly do this!” Helena shrieked, her maternal facade completely crumbling in front of the three hundred influential guests. “You are throwing away your entire future, your inheritance, and our family name for a mistake and a woman who brings nothing to our table!”

Marcus didn't even bother to turn his head back. He kept his eyes fixed on the exit, guiding his new wife and his secret daughter toward freedom. The whispers among the crowd swelled into a chaotic roar, journalists and high-society acquaintances scrambling to catch a glimpse of the unfolding drama. Flashbulbs from hidden cameras suddenly went off, capturing the humiliating exit of the Vance family heir.

Clara felt the bitter chill of the autumn night air hit her bare shoulders as they stepped out onto the grand stone portico. Valet attendants stood paralyzed by the entrance, unsure whether to bring around the newlywed's luxury sedan or ignore them entirely. Lily buried her face against Clara’s neck again, whispering small, frightened questions about why grandma was so angry.

“We’re safe now, sweetie,” Clara murmured, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

Marcus slammed his hand onto the hood of a nearby pillar, breathing heavily to control his temper. He reached into his tuxedo pocket, pulled out his car keys, and tossed them to a terrified valet who practically fumbled to catch them. The realization of what had just happened was sinking in, but there was no regret in Marcus’s eyes—only a fierce, unyielding determination to protect the two people who mattered most to him.

“We aren't going back to the penthouse tonight,” Marcus stated, opening the rear door of the vehicle for Clara and Lily.

Clara slid into the leather interior, adjusting her heavy bridal train carefully around her. She looked up at her husband, searching his face for any sign of hesitation after burning every bridge with his powerful family in a single moment.

“Where are we going, Marcus?” Clara asked quietly.

Marcus closed the door softly before walking around to the driver's side. He got in, started the engine, and looked at her through the rearview mirror with a haunting expression.

“To the cabin by the lake,” Marcus whispered, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned completely white. “Where my father hid the truth about my sister twenty years ago.”
