Chapter 10 - The Tables Turn

The red light on Julian’s phone blinked steadily in the freezing mountain air, a tiny beacon of absolute doom for Detective Miller. The corrupt officer stood paralyzed, his hand frozen halfway to his shoulder radio as the reality of his ruined career and impending prison sentence crashed down upon him.
“You’re bluffing,” Miller spat, though his voice lacked any of its former conviction. “The Vance family owns half the judicial system in this state. No federal judge would touch them.”
Julian chuckled softly, stepping closer to the heavy-duty SUV and tapping the driver-side window.
“Used to own, Miller. Past tense,” Julian corrected smoothly. “My mother’s empire was built on houses of cards and decades of hush money. The moment those financial streams got frozen by the federal probe tonight, every judge and politician on her payroll jumped ship faster than rats on a sinking luxury liner.”
Clara felt a profound wave of relief wash over her, though she kept little Lily safely tucked against her chest. She looked at Marcus, whose expression was a turbulent mix of vindication, shock, and lingering guilt over the deception that had brought them to this precipice.
Marcus took a slow step toward his cousin, his voice tight. “Why come back now, Julian? After all these years of staying away, why risk everything tonight?”
Julian’s smile faded, replaced by a dark, intense look of retribution that mirrored the family trait they all shared.
“Because twenty years ago, I watched them take my older sister away and lock her in that exact cabin for daring to love the wrong person,” Julian said, pointing a finger toward the dark, weathered wooden building behind them. “I swore then that I would tear down every single stone of the Vance foundation before I died. Tonight was just the beginning.”
Detective Miller realized he was entirely cornered. With federal agents presumably already moving in on the main estate, staying loyal to Helena Vance meant taking the fall alone. He slowly let go of his holster, raising his hands slightly in a gesture of surrender.
“I was just following orders,” Miller muttered bitterly, looking down at the gravel. “Helena said the girl was a liability to the corporate merger.”
“Save your defense for a jury, Miller,” Julian replied coldly, pulling a set of heavy zip-ties from his jacket pocket and tossing them at the officer's feet. “Tie your own hands behind your back and sit on the hood of your SUV, or I release the unedited footage of you taking cash bribes from Arthur.”
Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, then slowly dropped to his knees in the dirt, complying with the humiliating demand without another word.
Clara let out a long, shaky breath, looking down at Lily, who had finally drifted back to sleep, entirely unaware of the dramatic war being fought over her future.

“Marcus,” Clara whispered softly, turning to face her husband. “What happens now?”
