Chapter 8 - The Voice in the Woods

The metallic snap of the shotgun safety froze everyone in the clearing. The tactical operative instantly dropped into a low combat crouch, her hand flashing to the sidearm holstered at her hip, while Aiden smoothly stepped in front of Elena, using his own body as a shield.
"Hold your fire!" a gravelly, aged voice called out from the darkness beneath the thick pine branches. "Put the gun down, Ms. Vance, unless you want every security camera from here to the county line streaming your little midnight meeting straight to Beatrice Sterling's private terminal."
A tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped out from the shadows of the evergreens. He wore an old, weathered canvas hunting jacket and a woolen cap pulled low over his forehead, casting deep shadows across his face. But as he stepped into the dim amber light spilling from the tactical vehicle, Elena gasped, letting the wool blanket slip from her shoulders onto the damp earth.
"Uncle Thomas?" she breathed, taking an involuntary step forward.
Thomas Vance, her father’s younger brother and a former chief inspector for the state department of public safety who had mysteriously vanished from public life twelve years ago, stood before them. His face was lined with deep wrinkles and weathered by years of isolation, but his eyes were sharp, intelligent, and fiercely protective.
"You shouldn't have jumped that wall, Elena," Thomas said, shaking his head slowly as he lowered the double-barreled shotgun, resting the butt against the damp earth. "Or rather, you should have jumped it three months ago before you let those monsters lure you into their parlor with false promises about David's medical care."
Aiden Cross straightened up, relaxing his stance slightly, though his eyes remained watchful. "Inspector Vance. I was beginning to think you weren't going to make your scheduled appearance."
Elena whipped her head around to look at Aiden, a wave of betrayal washing over her. "You knew he was here? You planned this rendezvous with him?"
"I didn't plan it, Elena; I merely set the bait," Aiden answered without a trace of apology. "Beatrice Sterling needed a high-profile marriage to launder the family's public image ahead of the upcoming municipal redevelopment bids. To ensure your compliance, they targeted your brother's medical fund. But they didn't count on Thomas keeping an archive of every bribe, payoff, and cover-up executed by Marcus Vance over the past two decades."
Thomas stepped closer, reaching into the deep pocket of his canvas jacket to pull out a thick, yellowed manila folder tied with faded red string. He tossed it onto the steel workbench beside the aluminum briefcase.
"Julian thinks he's the master manipulator of this town, just like his mother," Thomas said, his voice hard as iron. "He thought marrying the engineer's daughter would permanently bury the sins of the Sterling Tower collapse. But he made one critical mistake."
Elena stepped up to the workbench, her fingers trembling as she untied the faded red string on the manila folder. "What mistake?"
"He didn't check the serial numbers on the settlement checks issued to the families of the victims twelve years ago," Thomas said grimly. "Every single hush-money payment was drawn from an offshore account registered directly under Julian Sterling's personal university trust fund—signed off when he was just nineteen years old."
Elena opened the folder. Inside were bank wire confirmations, certified signatures, and sworn affidavits from former Sterling executives who had been paid millions to keep silent about the faulty foundation materials.
"This isn't just civil fraud," Elena whispered, horror and vindication warring in her chest. "This is conspiracy and criminal negligence."
Before anyone could speak, the tactical tablet on the workbench chimed with a shrill, automated alarm. The screen flashed bright red, displaying a satellite tracking map of the entire county.

"Incoming drone swarm," the operative announced sharply, her fingers flying across the keypad. "Four private units, matching Sterling corporate specs, are grid-searching this exact sector. They'll be over this clearing in less than ninety seconds."
