Chapter 7 - The Red Dot

The crimson laser dot danced across the steering wheel before settling squarely over the center of Aiden Cross's chest. The silence inside the parked sedan grew instantly lethal, thick enough to touch.

Elena gasped, instinctively throwing her hands out as if she could physically block the invisible projectile. "Sniper!" she hissed, ducking below the dashboard level. "They found us! Move the car!"

Aiden didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He sat completely still in the driver's seat, his gaze fixed calmly on the dense tree line visible through the passenger-side window. A faint, cynical smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Relax, Elena. If they intended to kill us, the window would already be shattered," Aiden said, his voice entirely devoid of panic. He reached out and clicked a small toggle switch on the center console.

Instantly, a heavy, armored steel shutter rolled down from the roof lining, sealing the windshield and side windows with a dull, pneumatic thud. The red laser dot vanished against the newly raised metal barrier.

"Who is out there?" Elena demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and surging anger as she straightened up from the floorboards. "If that isn't Sterling security, then who has military-grade optics in these woods?"

"That would be my private security detail confirming that we've reached the designated rendezvous point," Aiden replied calmly, opening his door and stepping out into the cold night air.

Elena hesitated for a second before pushing her own door open and following him out. The damp forest floor swallowed the heels of her ruined shoes as she stepped into a small clearing surrounded by towering pines. Parked beneath a camouflage net was a heavy-duty tactical transport vehicle, its matte black paint absorbing the faint moonlight. Standing near the rear bumper was a woman in a tactical turtleneck and dark cargo trousers, holding a sophisticated thermal imaging tablet in one hand.

"Perimeter is secure, Mr. Cross," the woman reported crisply, not looking up from her screen. "No unauthorized heat signatures within a two-mile radius. Though the Sterling estate drone was spotted sweeping the northern ridge ten minutes ago."

Aiden nodded, turning his attention back to Elena. He reached into the back of the tactical vehicle and pulled out a heavy wool blanket, draping it over her shivering shoulders.

"The game has changed, Elena," Aiden said, his tone turning strictly professional. "By jumping that wall tonight, you shattered the narrative Julian and Beatrice spent six months constructing. They expected a compliant, broken bride who would swallow her humiliation for the sake of her brother's medical bills. Instead, you gave them a public spectacle."

"They have the legal documents," Elena reminded him, clutching the warm wool blanket tightly around her mud-stained dress. "The prenuptial agreement gives them total control over my assets and David's trust."

"Legal documents signed under duress and coercion can be dismantled, especially when new evidence emerges," Aiden countered, gesturing toward the back of the transport vehicle. "Inside this case are the original, unredacted structural safety logs from the Sterling Tower project—the ones your father managed to smuggle out of his office twenty-four hours before the fire."

Elena stepped closer, her breath catching in her throat. Resting on a steel workbench inside the vehicle was a heavy, fire-resistant aluminum briefcase, its latches marked with her father's distinct personal monogram: A.V.

"How did you find this?" she whispered, reaching out with a trembling hand to touch the metal surface.

"I didn't find it," Aiden said quietly, watching her face with intense scrutiny. "Your father left it in a secure safety deposit box with instructions to hand it over to you the moment you walked away from the Sterling family on your own terms. He knew this day would come."

Before Elena could lift the latch of the briefcase, a sharp, metallic clicking sound echoed from the dark treeline behind them, followed by the unmistakable sound of a shotgun safety being clicked off.
