Chapter 12 - The Courthouse Trap

The black sedan glided to a smooth halt before the reinforced steel security gates of the federal courthouse annex. The towering concrete facade of the building looked imposing and cold under the pale pre-dawn sky.

Aiden reached out to punch the intercom button on the security console, but before his finger could make contact, the dashboard display flickered violently. The navigation system shut down, replaced by a looping, high-resolution video feed of a private hospital room.

Elena leaned forward, her breath catching in her throat. The screen showed David sleeping peacefully in his hospital bed, hooked up to his intravenous drip and heart monitor. But standing right beside the bed, calmly adjusting the IV flow valve with a clinical smile, was Julian Sterling.

"No," Elena whispered, her blood running instantly cold. "No, how did he get into the restricted wing?"

Before Aiden could speak, the hospital room door opened on the screen, and Beatrice Sterling walked in, leaning heavily on her ebony cane. She looked directly into the mounted security camera above the bed, as if she knew Elena was watching from the car.

"A clever little escape, my dear," Beatrice’s voice crackled through the car's premium audio system, crystal clear and chillingly polite. "Did you really think a few stolen compliance logs and a friendly venture capitalist would shield you from the consequences of your choices?"

Elena grabbed the dashboard console, her voice rising in panic. "Julian! Leave him alone! He has nothing to do with this!"

Julian’s face leaned into the frame, the red mark on his hand barely visible as he adjusted his immaculate silk tie. "He is your brother, Elena. Which makes him part of the family whether you like it or not. The medical trust hasn't been transferred to an independent escrow; it was frozen by a court order signed thirty minutes ago by Judge Henderson—a very old, very loyal friend of my mother's."

Aiden’s jaw tightened. His fingers flew across the armored laptop resting on his knees, running a diagnostic on the courthouse gate system. "They locked the local judicial network down using a priority override code. We've been boxed out."

"You have until 8:00 AM to walk through the front doors of the Sterling estate, surrender the aluminum briefcase, and sign the amended compliance ledger," Julian said smoothly, his eyes dead and unblinking on the monitor. "If you aren't standing in the grand foyer by then to wash my mother's floor, the court order takes effect, and David's transfer papers to a state-funded palliative facility are processed immediately. Tick-tock, Elena."

The screen went black with a sharp click.

Elena sat frozen in her seat, the fragile hope built over the last two hours shattering completely. She looked from the dark screen to Aiden, who was already disconnecting the laptop and slipping it into his trench coat pocket with grim determination.

"We go back," Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous resolve that surprised even her.

Aiden stopped moving. He turned to look at her, his dark eyes searching her face. "Going back means walking straight into their trap. They'll strip you of every legal protection and bury you so deep you'll never see daylight."

"I'm not going back as a victim," Elena said, her fingers curling into tight fists as she reached down to pick up the discarded platinum wedding ring from the console. She didn't put it back on her finger; instead, she slipped it into the pocket of her ruined, mud-stained wedding dress. "I'm going back to finish what I started."

She reached for the door handle, but before she could push it open, a heavy armored transport van slammed to a stop directly behind their sedan, blocking them in completely as four armed men in black tactical gear stepped out, raising heavy riot shields toward the car.
