Chapter 8 - The Uniforms at the Door

The crisp, dark uniforms of the city police department stood out sharply against the golden and red hues of the banquet hall. Two officers marched in with steady, practiced strides, their boots clicking in unison against the marble floor. Behind them followed a senior detective, his badge catching the dim emergency light as he surveyed the chaotic scene.
Julian stepped back instinctively, his foot catching on the hem of Elena’s discarded wedding veil. He stumbled, barely catching his balance against the edge of the head table.
Detective Vance, Julian said, his voice pitching slightly upward as he recognized the senior officer. This is a private matter. A misunderstanding. There’s no need for—
Detective Miller raised a hand, cutting Julian off completely. His expression was stern, professional, and entirely unimpressed by the expensive tuxedo and the luxurious surroundings.
Julian Thorne, Detective Miller said, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, embezzlement, and the conspiracy to conceal a missing person.
A collective murmur erupted from the seated guests. Several prominent business associates stood up from their tables, quickly distancing themselves from Julian as if his very presence carried a contagious disease.
Elena shrieked again, pushing herself up from the floor with frantic energy, her hands clutching at Detective Miller’s sleeve.
You can’t arrest him! Elena cried, tears smearing her makeup into dark streaks. Look at me! I’m the bride! This is our wedding day!
Detective Miller gently but firmly brushed Elena’s hand away from his uniform.
Mrs. Vance—or whatever legal name you currently hold—you are also named in the warrant as an accessory, Detective Miller stated coldly. Step away from the suspect immediately.
Elena froze, her mouth hanging open in silent shock. She turned her head slowly to look at Julian, her eyes wide with betrayal and disbelief.
You put my name on the warrant? Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at her new husband. You framed me from the beginning, didn't you?
Julian didn't look at her. His gaze remained locked on Arthur, who stood calmly beside Clara, watching the unfolding drama with chilling indifference.
You’re a coward, Arthur, Julian spat, his voice trembling with fury. You set this whole trap. You used a child to deliver your petty revenge!
Maya didn't flinch at the accusation. She simply adjusted the yellow bow in her dark hair, stepping backward until she stood safely beside Clara, her small fingers wrapping securely around Clara’s trench coat hem.
Arthur took a slow step forward, stopping just inches from Julian as the police officers moved in on either side of the groom.
I didn't use a child, Julian, Arthur said softly, his voice barely audible over Elena’s frantic sobbing. I used the truth. And the truth is something you and Elena were never smart enough to outrun.
Detective Miller stepped between them, grabbing Julian’s right arm and pulling it behind his back. The sharp click of steel handcuffs echoed loudly in the silent hall, sealing Julian’s fate.

As the officers forced Julian toward the exit, his eyes swept over the crowded room one last time, landing on a figure near the back who had just slipped through the side doors.
