Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The crystal chandeliers of the grand St. Jude banquet hall hummed with a deceptive warmth, casting golden light over rows of seated guests in expensive attire. Julian adjusted his pristine white bowtie, the fabric suddenly feeling suffocating against his throat. Beside him stood Elena, her strapless white wedding dress pooling like fresh snow around her satin heels. They had just exchanged vows under a blooming floral arch, sealing a union that society columns had praised for months as a masterclass in elegance and ambition. Yet, the heavy air in the room fractured the second little Maya stepped forward.
Maya, wearing a bright yellow cardigan and a matching yellow bow pinned neatly in her dark hair, clutched a heavy silver microphone in both hands. Her small fingers trembled slightly against the cold metal, but her gaze remained remarkably steady as she scanned the crowd. She stood just inches from the newlywed couple, her breath visible for a split second in the air-conditioned chill.
Julian forced a tight, polished smile, assuming the child was about to deliver a rehearsed, adorable anecdote about her favorite uncle. Instead, Maya looked straight up at him, her small frame rigid.
Before she does, you should watch this, Maya said softly.
Her voice lacked the usual childish bounce, carrying a flat, chilling certainty that sliced through the ambient murmurs of the room. Before Julian could process the bizarre phrasing, Maya lifted the microphone higher and pointed it directly toward the massive projector screen hanging above the sweetheart table.
Instantly, the ambient light on the screen shifted. A high-resolution portrait flickered into view. It was a woman with sharp, familiar eyes and a sorrowful expression, someone Julian had not seen in over five years, someone the entire guest list believed was dead.
Julian froze, the blood draining completely from his face. His eyes went wide, reflecting the glowing blue light of the projector.
Elena’s composure shattered instantly. She threw her hands up, her palms facing the screen in a frantic gesture of desperate denial, her breath catching in her throat as she spun to face her new husband.
I didn't know about it! Elena shouted, her voice cracking with sudden, raw panic as she backed away from Julian.
Julian turned his head slowly, his jaw locked, staring at his bride with a terrifying, unfamiliar coldness.
Did you? Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a dark fury.

Before Elena could answer, the projector screen clicked, and an audio file began to play.
