Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the St. Jude banquet hall began to push open with a slow, heavy creak that echoed loudly through the silent room. Every head in the audience snapped around, all eyes converging on the entryway where a slender figure stood framed by the dim hallway light.
A woman in a dark trench coat stepped over the threshold. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe ponytail, and she wore practical leather boots that clicked sharply against the marble floor as she walked forward. Her face was calm, utterly devoid of the panic that consumed Elena or the shock that paralyzed Julian.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He took two involuntary steps forward, his hands twitching at his sides.
Clara? Julian breathed the name like a curse.
Clara stopped halfway down the central aisle, standing just beneath the glittering chandeliers. She pulled off her leather gloves one finger at a time, folding them neatly and tucking them into her coat pocket. She did not look at the seated guests; her gaze was fixed entirely on the man in the black tuxedo and the woman in the white wedding dress standing near the altar.
You look radiant, Elena, Clara said, her voice dripping with a chilling, polite sarcasm. Such a shame the marriage won’t even last until midnight.
Elena shrank back, pressing her spine against Julian’s side, though Julian immediately shrugged her off, stepping away from her as if she were toxic.
Clara, what is the meaning of this? Julian demanded, his voice rising in pitch as panic finally pierced his stoic exterior. What kind of sick game are you playing with Arthur?
Clara offered a tight, humorless smile. She turned her head slightly to acknowledge little Maya, who gave her a small, respectful nod from beside the floral arrangement.
It’s not a game, Julian, Clara said evenly, taking another slow step closer. It’s an audit. You and Elena thought you could bury the past, liquidate Arthur’s assets, and start a bright new life with stolen money. But you forgot one crucial detail.
What detail? Julian barked, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides.
Clara stopped walking, standing just ten feet away from the newlyweds. She reached into her trench coat pocket and pulled out a heavy manila envelope, holding it up for everyone to see.
Arthur never signed the divorce papers, Clara said, her voice ringing clear and hard through the hall. Which means your marriage to Elena isn't just a sham—it’s bigamy.
Elena let out a sharp, piercing shriek, her knees buckling completely as she collapsed onto the floor in a heap of white tulle and satin.
May you like
Julian stared at the manila envelope, his mind racing as the legal and social implications crashed down around him. But before he could utter a single word in defense, the heavy doors behind Clara slammed shut with a thunderous bang, and the banquet hall lights suddenly flickered and died.
