Chapter 5: The Return to the Manor

The midnight fog rolled heavily over the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, wrapping the sprawling gothic architecture in an eerie, ghostly veil. Helen’s sedan crept along the service road, parking near the overgrown perimeter hedge far from the reach of the security cameras. Clara sat in the passenger seat, wearing a dark turtleneck and durable cargo trousers borrowed from Helen’s wardrobe, the antithesis of the delicate lace wedding dress she had worn only hours earlier. The fresh red scratch on her cheek had begun to scab over, a dark mark of defiance in the dim dashboard light.
"The security patrol changes shifts at midnight precisely," Helen whispered, keeping her eyes fixed on the distant amber glow of the manor's security lights. "You’ll have exactly seven minutes to slip through the servants' entrance near the greenhouse before the infrared sensors reset."
Clara nodded, her hands gripping the straps of a small nylon backpack containing a flashlight, a portable scanner, and the edited prenuptial documents. Fear was a cold weight in her stomach, but it was matched by an absolute refusal to be treated like property ever again. She slipped out of the car door, moving silently across the damp grass like a shadow. The familiar scent of pine and rich earth filled her lungs as she reached the heavy wooden service door.
To her surprise, the door was unlocked. It wasn't a stroke of incredible luck; it was a deliberate invitation. Julian had left it open, waiting in the dimly lit mudroom with a nervous expression and his black tuxedo jacket discarded over a nearby chair, his white shirt collar unbuttoned.
Clara froze, her hand dropping instinctively to the small pocket knife in her pants. "What are you doing here?" she demanded in a sharp, dangerous whisper.
Julian flinched, stepping forward with his hands raised defensively. "I knew you’d come back for the real files," he said quietly, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "My mother is furious. She’s already called our family lawyers to draft an annulment claiming you abandoned the marriage voluntarily. If that goes through, you leave with nothing, and she buries you."
Clara stared at him, trying to read the sincerity in his tired eyes. "Why help me now, Julian? Why didn't you stop her this morning?"
May you like
"Because if I speak out against my mother in public, she destroys me before I can build the power to stop her," Julian confessed, stepping closer. "She controls the board, the accounts, and my entire life. But with you? With your willingness to fight back? We have a chance. The main safe is upstairs in the study, but the security code was changed an hour ago. Only Beatrice has it."
Clara didn't blink. "Then we need to find Beatrice."
