Chapter 4: The False Bottom

Clara’s heart skipped a beat as she knelt beside the silver suitcase resting against the cottage wall. The metal latches clicked open with a familiar metallic snap, revealing the neatly folded layers of her everyday clothes and remaining wedding accessories. Following Helen’s precise instructions, Clara slid her trembling fingers along the interior velvet lining near the hinges until she felt the subtle seam of a concealed compartment. With a gentle pull, a thin panel of reinforced cardboard lifted away, exposing a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing the Vance family crest.

She pulled the envelope out, her breath catching in her throat. The paper felt heavy and expensive. As she broke the wax seal, several folded documents slid onto her lap. The top paper was a prenuptial agreement, but it had handwritten amendments scrawled in Julian’s familiar, hurried handwriting. These modifications drastically altered the distribution of corporate assets in the event of a separation, effectively granting Clara controlling shares in Vance Enterprises if the marriage dissolved due to physical abuse or coercion within the first year.

Helen leaned over, her eyes widening as she scanned the legal paragraphs. "Julian actually did it," she murmured in disbelief. "He knew Beatrice was trapping him, and he used his own wedding day to secure your exit strategy. He just didn't expect you to trigger it on day one by splashing soapy water on his trousers."

A strange, complex emotion washed over Clara. The anger she felt toward Julian softened slightly, replaced by a deep pity for a man trapped in a gilded cage of his own family’s making. Yet, pity did not erase the fact that he had stood silently while his mother terrorized her. Julian was a coward, but he was also her only legal weapon against a dynasty that considered human lives to be disposable corporate assets.

"If I take this to the board, what happens?" Clara asked, looking up at Helen for guidance.

"Chaos," Helen answered bluntly. "Beatrice will claim you stole the documents under duress. She will deploy corporate lawyers, private investigators, and public relations firms to paint you as an unstable gold-digger. You need more than just a draft amendment, Clara. You need proof of the systematic financial fraud Beatrice uses to keep the family empire afloat. And that proof is locked inside the main safe in the Vance manor study."

Clara stared at the documents in her lap. Going back into the lion's den was sheer madness. Yet, sitting here hiding in a remote cottage would only delay the inevitable hunt. If she wanted true freedom, she couldn't just escape the Vance family—she had to dismantle them entirely.

"Help me get back inside," Clara said firmly, her eyes locking onto Helen's with a cold, resolute fire.
