Chapter 10: The Federal Subpoena

The fluorescent lights of the federal prosecutor’s office buzzed softly, casting a sterile white glow over stacks of legal briefs and financial auditing reports. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Vance—no relation to the corporate dynasty—adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses as he scrolled through the data files extracted from the USB drive Clara and Julian had provided. The silence in the small conference room was heavy, broken only by the steady clicking of computer keys.
"These files detail over a decade of systematic asset stripping, tax evasion, and offshore money laundering," Marcus said, looking up from his monitor to fix a piercing gaze on Clara and Julian sitting across the polished table. "If these records are authentic—and our preliminary analysis suggests they are—this will result in the immediate indictment of Beatrice Vance and the total restructuring of Vance Enterprises."
Julian nodded slowly, his expression grim. "They are authentic. I helped my mother manage the shell companies for three years before I realized the full scope of what she was doing. I was complicit by silence, Mr. Vance. I am prepared to plead guilty to my role in the conspiracy if it means dismantling the corruption at the top."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by the young man’s unexpected accountability. "That’s a brave stance, Mr. Vance. Federal judges take corporate conspiracy very seriously, but cooperation and self-reporting carry significant weight in sentencing."
Clara reached across the table, placing her hand gently over Julian’s clenched fist to steady him. "He’s doing the right thing, counselor. We both are. What protections can the federal government offer us when Beatrice realizes we’ve handed her empire over to the Department of Justice?"
"Federal protective custody and a temporary restraining order freezing all Vance family assets immediately," Marcus replied, pulling a fresh document from his briefcase and sliding it across the table. "Once I sign these warrants, Beatrice’s legal team will be entirely neutralized by asset forfeiture laws. She won't have the liquidity to fund private investigators or corporate hit squads."

Clara reviewed the legal paperwork carefully, her sharp eyes scanning every clause to ensure there were no hidden loopholes. The days of being blindsided by hidden agendas were officially over. She picked up a heavy fountain pen and signed her name with firm, deliberate strokes. Julian followed suit immediately, his hand steady and resolute.
As Marcus stamped the documents with the official seal of the United States District Court, Clara felt a massive weight lift from her shoulders. The nightmare of the wedding hallway felt lifetimes away. They had stepped out of the shadow of tyranny and into the uncompromising light of justice.
