Chapter 2 - The Sound of Betrayal

The ballroom grew so silent that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a distant jet engine.
Julian took another step toward the stage, his chest heaving beneath his designer tuxedo. He held up a hand, silently pleading with the boy, yet paralyzed by a cold dread pooling in his stomach.
“Leo, turn that off right now. This is a family matter, let’s talk in private,” Julian urged, his voice dropping into a desperate baritone that failed to hide his mounting panic.
Chloe stepped in front of Julian, blocking his path to the steps. Her white gown rustled aggressively against the polished hardwood floor. Her face had gone from horror to a hardened, defensive glare.
“Don’t you dare listen to him, Julian!” Chloe snapped, her voice losing its sweet, bridal lulling tone entirely. “He’s been coached. Someone got to him. Look at him, he’s just a confused little boy manipulated by his bitter aunt!”
From the third row, Aunt Sarah stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floorboards.
“Don’t you put this on me, you lying snake!” Sarah yelled back, pointing a long, manicured finger straight at the bride. “We all trusted you! Julian, for God’s sake, let the boy play the recording!”
Eleanor buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with suppressed sobs as the realization of a public disaster settled over her.
On stage, Leo did not flinch. He adjusted the microphone stand upward so it matched his height, refusing to back down.
The smartphone screen continued to glow, the audio wave bouncing rhythmically as the digital file buffered for two agonizing seconds.
Julian’s eyes darted between his bride and his son. He felt the heavy gaze of three hundred elite guests burning into the back of his neck. Every phone in the room was out, cameras rolling, capturing the exact moment his perfect life disintegrated.
“Leo, buddy, whatever you think you heard or whatever someone told you to say, it’s not true,” Julian said, his voice cracking slightly as he pleaded with his own child. “Daddy loves you. Daddy loves Chloe. We are a family now.”
“No, we aren’t,” Leo replied softly, his voice steadying with sudden, eerie maturity.
Before Julian could lunge forward to snatch the phone from his son's grip, a harsh, metallic audio wave spiked on the screen.
The built-in speaker crackled to life, echoing a familiar, chilling female voice across the vast ballroom.
“Once the old man signs the trust fund over, we dump the kid at the boarding school in Vermont and we never look back,” the voice declared clearly.

The whole room gasped as the audio continued to play.
