Chapter 9

The evening before the wedding arrived with a brilliant sunset that painted the Manhattan skyline in shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The rehearsal dinner was hosted at an intimate rooftop restaurant overlooking the East River, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights and lush green potted plants. Family members, close friends, and key boutique staff gathered to celebrate the couple ahead of the big day.
Marcus stood up at the head of the long wooden table, tapping a silver spoon gently against his crystal water glass. Conversations hushed, and thirty smiling faces turned toward him. He looked down the table at Maya, who radiated elegance in a cream-colored silk midi dress, her dark curls styled in soft, cascading waves.
"I just want to thank everyone here for traveling from near and far to celebrate this milestone with us," Marcus began, his voice warm and steady. "People often talk about weddings as a celebration of two individuals coming together, but tonight makes it clear that a marriage is really about community."
Applauding murmurs rippled through the tables. Marcus’s mother wiped a proud tear from the corner of her eye with a linen napkin.
"We’ve faced our share of challenges over the years," Marcus continued, glancing briefly at Maya with a loving smile. "Building a business from scratch isn't for the faint of heart. It tests your resolve, your patience, and your faith in humanity. But standing here tonight, looking at the people who believed in us when we had nothing more than a dream and a rented storefront, I am overwhelmed with gratitude."
Maya felt a lump form in her throat as she listened to his words. She stood up alongside him, resting her hand in his palm.
"Marcus is right," Maya added, looking around the table at her friends, family, and team members like Chloe. "Every single person in this room has contributed a piece to our story. From the late nights working in the boutique to the moments of grace we’ve learned to extend to one another. Thank you for walking this path with us. Tomorrow isn't just about a wedding; it’s a celebration of our shared resilience and love."
The dinner dissolved into warm laughter, heartfelt toasts, and clinking glasses as the evening progressed into night. Friends shared stories of Marcus and Maya’s early dating days, reminiscing about cramped apartments, takeout pizza, and endless business plans scribbled on paper napkins.
As the party wound down around ten o'clock, Maya and Marcus took a quiet walk along the perimeter of the rooftop terrace, away from the bustling tables. The city lights twinkled below like a million scattered diamonds, mirroring the bright future stretching out before them.
"Are you nervous?" Marcus asked softly, pulling her close against his chest as the cool autumn breeze swept across the river.
May you like
"Not even a little bit," Maya replied, resting her head against his shoulder. "I've never been more certain of anything in my life."
