Chapter 7: The Midnight Packing

The clock on the nursery wall ticked softly, marking the arrival of 2:00 AM. The house was dead silent, wrapped in the deceptive peace of the deep night. Inside the softly lit room, Julian moved with absolute stealth, pulling a heavy duffel bag from the top of the cedar closet. His navy blue suit jacket was tossed over the armchair, and he worked in his shirtsleeves, his movements swift, methodical, and practiced.
Vanessa was awake, sitting up in the makeshift pallet Julian had built for her near the crib. She watched him with wide, intelligent eyes, clutching her favorite worn plush rabbit to her chest. She didn't ask questions; she had learned during the evening hours that quiet compliance was necessary when the adults were moving like shadows.
""We're leaving, aren't we, Daddy?"" Vanessa whispered, her voice barely carrying across the room.
Julian stopped for a fraction of a second, a dark duffel bag in his hands, before nodding slowly. ""Yes, sweetheart. We're going to take a trip. Just the three of us. To a place where it's quiet, and where no one can yell or tell us what to do.""
""Can we bring Leo’s white blanket?"" Vanessa asked, standing up and walking over to the crib where the newborn was sleeping soundly.
""We'll take everything we need,"" Julian replied, walking over and kneeling down beside her. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. ""Listen to me, Vanessa. When we walk out of here, you need to hold my hand tightly and not look back. Can you do that for me?""
""I can,"" Vanessa said firmly, her jaw set with a determination that mirrored her father's.
Julian began packing the last of the infant supplies—formula, bottles, spare clothes—into the bag, his mind racing through the logistics of the escape. Marcus Vance had left a set of keys to an old, unassuming coastal cabin three hours north in the glove compartment of Julian’s secondary car, parked two blocks away in an underground municipal garage. It was the only asset Elena didn't control, the only safe harbor left in a world governed by her wealth and paranoia.
Suddenly, a faint sound echoed from the hallway outside the heavy oak door—the distinct, heavy scrape of a key turning in the brass lock.
Julian’s blood ran cold. The nursery door didn't use standard keys; only the master override held by Elena could open it from the outside.
""Daddy?"" Vanessa whimpered, grabbing the edge of his sleeve.

""Stay behind the crib, Vanessa,"" Julian hissed, his voice urgent but controlled. He stood up quickly, stepping in front of the baby's bed just as the heavy door swung open, revealing Elena standing in the threshold in a dark silk robe, her face impassive in the dim light.
