Chapter 3: The Sanctuary of Locked Doors

The heavy oak door of the nursery clicked shut, sealing out the sterile echoes of the marble hallway and the oppressive presence of Elena. Julian set the baby down with infinite care into the polished walnut crib, adjusting the white swaddling blanket to ensure the infant was warm and secure. The room was bathed in the soft, amber glow of a bedside lamp, a stark contrast to the harsh daylight outside. Vanessa sat quietly in the corner on a plush velvet armchair, her dark red velvet dress pooled around her small legs, her gaze fixed entirely on the crib.
Julian pulled up a chair beside her, taking her small, cold hands in his. The adrenaline of the hallway confrontation was slowly fading, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. He looked at his daughter, realizing with a pang of guilt how often she had been forced to grow up in the margins of their high-society life.
""You were very brave out there, Vanessa,"" Julian said softly, rubbing his thumb gently over the back of her hand. ""You kept him safe.""
Vanessa looked up, her blue eyes wide and searching. ""Is Mom going to send him away, Daddy? Like she said she would?""
The question hung in the air, sharp and unavoidable. Julian swallowed hard, struggling to find words that would offer comfort without lying to her. Elena’s ambitions had always been ruthless, but this latest development—the arrival of the newborn whose true origins were shrouded in secrecy and family politics—had pushed her past the point of rational control.
""No one is sending anyone away,"" Julian answered, though even to his own ears, the promise sounded fragile. ""We are a family, Vanessa. Whatever happens, I am going to protect you and your brother.""
""His name is Leo,"" Vanessa whispered, correcting her father with a quiet determination that surprised him. ""I named him while you were still downstairs.""
Julian blinked, a faint, sad smile touching the corners of his mouth. ""Leo. That’s a strong name. I think he likes it.""
Across the room, the baby—Leo—let out a soft sigh and drifted back into a deep, unttroubled sleep. For a few moments, the room was wrapped in a fragile peace. But the silence was soon broken by a sharp, rhythmic tapping at the nursery door. Julian’s body went rigid. He stood up slowly, releasing Vanessa’s hand, and walked across the room. When he turned the brass handle and pulled the door open a few inches, Elena’s cold, composed face greeted him in the dim light of the hallway. She didn't look angry anymore; her expression was far more dangerous—it was completely calculating.
""We need to talk, Julian,"" Elena said, her voice eerily calm. ""About the boy, about the trust, and about what happens when the lawyers arrive tomorrow morning.""

Julian stared at his wife, realizing the battle in the hallway was only the prologue.
