Chapter 10: The Rustic Haven

The gray sedan crunched slowly up the snow-dusted gravel driveway of the secluded cabin tucked deep within the northern pine forest. The structure was old, built of weathered timber and river stone, surrounded by towering evergreens that blotted out the gray morning sky. It was a stark contrast to the luxurious modern white marble architecture of the city estate, but to Julian, it was the most beautiful sight in the world.
He parked near the weathered front porch, cutting the engine. The sudden silence of the forest enveloped them, broken only by the whisper of the wind through the pine needles.
""We're here,"" Julian said, turning around in his seat to look at Vanessa.
Vanessa blinked sleepily, her blonde hair slightly tousled, still clutching Leo in her arms. The baby remained fast asleep inside the white swaddling blanket, completely unfazed by the three-hour journey.
""Is this our new home?"" Vanessa asked, looking out the window at the rustic cabin.
""For a little while, yes,"" Julian replied, opening his door and stepping out into the crisp morning air. The chill bit at his face, waking him up entirely. He walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and carefully helped Vanessa out, ensuring she didn't lose her grip on the infant.
Unlocking the heavy wooden front door with the physical key Marcus Vance had provided, Julian pushed it open, revealing a cozy, wood-paneled interior that smelled of cedar, old books, and woodsmoke. A fieldstone fireplace dominated the living room, and a small kitchen sat tucked away in the corner. It was rustic, primitive even, but it was safe.
Within minutes, Julian had a fire crackling in the hearth, throwing a warm, amber glow across the worn wooden floors. He set the heavy duffel bag on the worn sofa and helped Vanessa settle into a comfortable rocking chair by the fire, where she could cradle Leo safely.
""I'll go check the pantry and make sure the utilities are running,"" Julian said, brushing a hand affectionately over Vanessa’s hair. ""You stay right here and keep him warm.""
Vanessa nodded, gazing into the flickering flames of the fireplace. For the first time in her young life, she didn't feel the oppressive weight of expectation or the chilling presence of Elena’s watchful eye. Here, in the quiet woods, time seemed to slow down.

Julian walked over to the small kitchen area, turning on the faucet. After a sputtering cough, clear, cold well water began to flow. He let out a long breath he felt like he’d been holding for days. They had made it. They were off the grid, hidden away from the ruthless machinery of high society. But as he looked out the small kitchen window toward the endless expanse of the forest, a cold knot of dread remained in his stomach. Elena was not the type of woman to simply let go. She would search every corner of the state until she found them.
