Chapter 9

As the hours ticked slowly toward dawn, the initial shock in Room 412 gave way to a heavy, exhausted desolation. Nurse Sarah Jenkins returned periodically to check Chloe’s vital signs and monitor the infant, her demeanor strictly professional, maintaining a respectful distance from the emotional shrapnel littering the floor. Marcus remained seated in the vinyl chair by the corner, staring blankly at the wall, refusing to look toward the bed where Chloe sat rocking the baby in a desperate attempt to soothe its restless whimpers. The white envelope with its broken crimson wax seal still rested on the tray table, a silent monument to the lie that had brought them all to this breaking point. The bright, festive teddy bear sat discarded on the floor nearby, its cheerful smile looking bizarrely out of place in the gloom.
Eleanor sat stiffly on a hard plastic chair near the door, her handbag clutched tightly in her lap, her eyes heavy with fatigue but wide awake with lingering adrenaline. She looked at the tiny bundle in Chloe’s arms with a strange, conflicting mixture of pity and resentment. Biologically, the child was a complete stranger—a random human being carrying the genetic code of a nameless, faceless stranger who had stolen her son's peace of mind. Yet, as the baby let out a soft, delicate yawn and stretched its tiny fingers upward into the empty air, Eleanor felt a painful tug at her heartstrings that had nothing to do with DNA and everything to do with basic human vulnerability. An innocent infant could not be held accountable for the sins of its mother, even if its mere existence was a living testament to betrayal.
"Have you notified him?" Marcus asked suddenly, his voice raspy and dry from hours of silence. He didn't turn his head, keeping his eyes fixed on the baseboard across the room. Chloe stopped rocking for a fraction of a second, her breath catching in her throat. She knew exactly who he meant. The man from the conference—a colleague whose name she had tried desperately to forget, living three states away with his own family and career. "No," Chloe whispered, the confession barely audible. "He doesn't know. He has no idea I was even pregnant." Marcus let out a bitter, humorless laugh that sounded more like a cough. "Well, you'd better figure out how to reach him, because by sunrise, he's going to find out he has a family he never asked for."
