Chapter 10

The first pale streaks of gray dawn began to filter through the horizontal blinds of Room 412, washing out the harsh yellow glow of the overhead fluorescent tubes and casting long, skeletal shadows across the floor. The night shift was mercifully ending, and the distant murmur of the morning hospital shift change echoed from the hallway. Marcus stood up slowly from the vinyl chair, his joints cracking audibly in the quiet room. He looked exhausted, age lines etched deep around his eyes that hadn't been there twenty-four hours ago. Without a word to Chloe or his mother, he walked over to the bedside tray table, picked up the discarded white envelope containing the DNA report, and slid it neatly into the inside pocket of his jacket. The physical evidence of his broken life was now securely stowed away, ready to be handed over to legal counsel as soon as the sun fully crested the horizon.
Chloe looked up, her face pale and drawn, the shadows beneath her eyes bruised purple from a sleepless night of quiet torment. "Marcus, please... can we just talk? Just five minutes without the anger?" she begged, her voice cracking with exhaustion. Marcus stopped at the threshold of the door, his hand resting on the metal handle. He turned his head slightly, his expression impenetrable, devoid of the warmth and love that had defined their relationship for years. "There is nothing left to talk about, Chloe. My lawyer will handle the divorce filings, and the arrangements for your departure from the house. As for the baby... I genuinely wish the child a good life, but my part in this story is finished." The cold finality of his words struck her like a physical blow, leaving her completely speechless as he pulled the door open and stepped out into the hallway.
Eleanor stood up, smoothing down the front of her grey plaid jacket with a brisk, efficient motion. She looked down at Chloe one last time, her expression a complex tangle of lingering bitterness and profound sorrow. "You destroyed a good man, Chloe. I hope whatever temporary thrill caused this was worth losing everything," Eleanor said quietly, her voice devoid of venom, carrying only the weight of absolute disappointment. She turned on her heel and followed her son out of the room, leaving Chloe entirely alone in the sterile white box with her newborn baby. The morning sun continued to rise outside, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, while the reality of their shattered lives settled in for the long, difficult haul ahead.
