Chapter 11

Three days later, the sterile environment of the hospital maternity ward felt like a distant, agonizing memory, replaced by the mahogany-paneled conference room of Marcus Vance’s divorce attorney downtown. The air smelled of expensive leather, stale coffee, and impending litigation. Marcus sat at the head of the long oak table, looking remarkably composed in a tailored charcoal suit, though the dark circles beneath his eyes betrayed the sleepless nights that had followed his revelation at St. Jude Memorial. Across the table sat Chloe, flanked by a public defender specialized in family law, looking pale and overwhelmed in a simple beige cardigan. The white envelope with the wax seal, now officially entered into evidence as Exhibit A, sat squarely in the center of the table, its damning contents casting a long shadow over the proceedings.

"Based on the conclusive paternity results and my client's immediate, unequivocal disavowal of paternity upon discovery, we are filing for an expedited annulment on the grounds of fraudulent misrepresentation," Marcus’s attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn Vance—no relation—stated calmly, her voice devoid of emotion as she slid a thick stack of legal documents across the polished wood. Chloe’s attorney scanned the pages quickly, her eyebrows arching slightly as she realized the sheer airtight nature of their opposition's case. There was no alimony to contest, no marital property dispute that hadn't already been addressed by prenuptial agreements, and above all, zero legal obligation for Marcus to provide child support for a biological stranger. Chloe kept her eyes glued to her lap, her hands tightly clenched in her lap as the paperwork that officially erased her marriage slid toward her.

Marcus didn't look at her with anger anymore; his expression was entirely hollow, a terrifying mask of absolute detachment. He had spent the last seventy-two hours consulting not just divorce attorneys, but also private investigators to track down the biological father listed in Chloe’s belated confession. The man, a regional vice president named Richard Hayes living in Chicago, had already been served with preliminary notification packets via courier. "Mr. Vance has authorized me to state that while he holds no malice toward the infant, he will maintain zero contact moving forward, and all legal ties are to be severed permanently," Evelyn continued, her tone crisp and professional. Chloe swallowed hard, a single tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek as she realized the full, devastating extent of her isolation. She had traded a secure, loving future for a catastrophic secret, and now the bill had finally come due.
