"...is malignant," Dr. Aris finished. The word dropped into the room like a lead weight, shattering the fragile hope they had clung to for the past forty-eight hours. Stage III. Aggressive. The medical jargon washed over Elias like static. He watched Hannah’s face. She didn't cry. Instead, a chilling stillness washed over her, the kind of resignation of someone who had been fighting a war long before the enemy was even named.
When the doctor left, outlining a brutal regimen of surgery and chemotherapy, the silence returned, heavier this time. Elias sat back down. His mind raced with a million thoughts—doctors to call, specialists to find, funds to liquidate—but his body remained paralyzed.
"You don't have to stay," Hannah whispered, her voice devoid of emotion. She stared at the ceiling tiles. "This isn't your mess, Elias. I just... I panicked when they told me I needed an emergency contact. You can go back to your life."

"Stop," Elias said sharply, though his tone was laced with pain. He leaned in, forcing her to look at him. "Do you think I'm going to walk out that door? After you finally let me back in?"
"I'm going to get sick, Elias. Really sick. I'm going to lose my hair, my strength. You couldn't handle me when I was just sad. How are you going to handle me when I'm dying?"
