Chapter 12 - The Cost of Hope

The reality of the American medical system soon crashed down on them. Hannah’s specialized post-stroke rehabilitation and the required experimental immunotherapy to ensure the cancer didn't return were classified as "out-of-network" and "experimental." The insurance company denied the claim. The cost was astronomical—over four hundred thousand dollars.

Elias didn't tell Hannah. He knew the guilt would crush her newly fragile spirit. Instead, he made calls. He contacted his business partners and initiated a buyout of his shares in the firm he had spent a decade building. He listed his downtown loft for sale. He liquidated his retirement accounts.

Within three weeks, he had the money wired to the hospital. When he signed the final papers, transferring the last of his wealth, he didn't feel a moment of regret. Money was paper. Hannah was breathing.
