Chapter 7: The Witness in the Files

The basement office of Arthur Pendelton smelled of old paper, pipe tobacco, and decades of forgotten legal history. Arthur, a retired federal prosecutor who had spent forty years fighting corporate corruption, sat behind a cluttered oak desk, adjusting his thick-rimmed glasses as he studied the documents Elena had placed before him. Across the desk, Elena sat straight and composed, though the faint tremors in her hands betrayed the immense stress of the past twenty-four hours. Lily sat quietly in a corner chair, coloring in a notebook Arthur had provided. Arthur looked up over his glasses, his weathered face etched with deep lines of grave concern. "These financial audits and medical records are explosive, Elena," Arthur said, his voice deep and gravelly. "If half of this is verifiable, it's enough to dismantle the Vance family's philanthropic foundation and strip them of their custodial rights permanently."
Elena leaned forward, her dark eyes fixed intently on the retired attorney. "It's all real, Arthur. I spent the last three years quietly copying restricted corporate files while working as an archivist for their foundation. I saw how they buy silence, manipulate courts, and ruin anyone who challenges them." Arthur sighed, leaning back in his creaking leather chair. "The Vance family operates like a shadow government in this city. They own judges, politicians, and police precincts. Bringing them down won't just be difficult; it will be dangerous. They will come after you with everything they have." Elena’s expression hardened. "They already came after my daughter. I have nothing left to lose." Arthur nodded slowly, a grim respect flickering in his eyes. "Very well. But we need a catalyst. We need someone inside their inner circle willing to testify on the record about the institutional abuse and the forced sedations."
Elena went silent, her mind flashing to Julian standing in the courtyard, giving her the keycard while defying his mother. "Julian," she murmured aloud. Arthur raised an eyebrow. "Julian Vance? Your ex-husband? He’s been his mother's shadow for a decade. He won't risk his inheritance." Elena shook her head, recalling the raw remorse in Julian's eyes. "He’s reaching his breaking point. Eleanor treats him like a pawn, and she nearly poisoned our child. If anyone can break his silence, it's me." Arthur tapped a pen against the desk thoughtfully. "It's a massive gamble. If he turns on us at the last second, our entire case collapses. But if he flips, it’s a checkmate." Elena stood up, walking over to check on Lily before turning back to the attorney with absolute determination. "Then I need to speak with him. Securely, and without Eleanor knowing."
